4 Ways to Drink Brandy

Brandy, derived from the Dutch word ‘brandewijn’ meaning ‘burnt wine,’ is a distilled spirit made primarily from grapes and aged in wooden barrels. Its rich flavor palette and sophisticated reputation have made it a popular choice for liquor enthusiasts and casual drinkers alike. Here are four ways to drink brandy that can elevate your spirits experience to new heights.

1. Neat

One of the simplest and most classic ways to enjoy brandy is to drink it ‘neat’, or without any accompaniments or dilution. To savor your brandy neat, pour a small serving (around 1-2 ounces) into a snifter at room temperature. Hold the glass by its stem to avoid warming the spirit with your hand, take in the aroma, and sip slowly. This method allows you to fully appreciate the depth of flavor and smoothness unique to brandy.

2. On the Rocks

If you’re looking for a cooler drink with a slightly mellower taste, try adding a large ice cube or two to your brandy glass – but no more, as you don’t want to over-dilute this precious elixir. This preparation is called ‘on the rocks,’ and it’s perfect for those who enjoy sipping their spirits while chilling out in more ways than one.

3. In Classic Cocktails

For those who enjoy creative beverages or social mixology, incorporating brandy into classic cocktail recipes can offer an exciting twist on familiar tastes. Try substituting brandy for other base spirits like whiskey or gin in classic cocktails like Old Fashioned, Manhattan, Sazerac, or even a Negroni. The complex flavors of aged brandy can add a new dimension and sophistication to traditional mixed drinks.

4. Warmed with a Brandy Warmer

When wintertime comes calling or cozy nights beckon, a brandy warmer can provide the ultimate comfort. This preparation involves gently heating the brandy in a glass held over a source of heat (such as a small candle or low flame) until it reaches your ideal temperature. The warmth of the drink helps release the brandy’s full bouquet of aromas while also giving you a delightful sippable treat that warms from within.

Whether you’re a seasoned spirits connoisseur or just discovering the world of distilled beverages, exploring these four ways to drink brandy can expand your appreciation for this age-old liquor. So go ahead, relish the robust flavors and elegant charm of brandy, and toast to your newfound knowledge!
