4 Ways to Dress Like You Were in the 1960s

The 1960s was a decade marked by significant changes, not only in politics, music, and culture, but also in fashion. From the mod-inspired outfits and vibrant palettes to stylish prints and iconic accessories, the ’60s boasted some of the most memorable fashion trends of the century that still resonate today. If you’d like to dress like you stepped right out of the groovy era, here are four ways to achieve that authentic 1960s look.

1. Embrace Mod Fashion

Mod fashion was at its peak during the mid-’60s and was characterized by bold geometric patterns, simple silhouettes, and a monochromatic color scheme. To incorporate this style into your wardrobe, look for A-line shift dresses, mini skirts, slim pantsuits with cropped jackets, and turtleneck sweaters made from fabrics like slimming jersey knit or textural corduroy. While traditional mod fashion mainly features black and white color palettes, don’t be afraid to experiment with bold primary colors such as red, blue, and yellow for a more contemporary twist.

2. Rock Flared Trousers and Bell Bottoms

One of the most iconic fashion trends of the ’60s is unarguably the flared trousers or bell bottoms. Initially associated with bohemian styles and later adopted by hippies, these wide-legged pants can add instant retro flair to any modern outfit. Pair them with a simple fitted tee or a classic white blouse for an effortlessly cool look. For an extra dose of ’60s vibes, opt for flares made from denim or corduroy or choose a patterned design – paisley or floral prints are particularly period-appropriate choices.

3. Accessorize Like a ’60s Icon

No trip back to the ’60s would be complete without proper accessorization. Oversized, round sunglasses – think John Lennon or Twiggy – are a must, as well as statement jewelry such as chunky necklaces and bracelets made of plastic or Lucite. Don’t forget about headwear; fashion-forward women from this era often sported pillbox hats, headbands, and scarves tied around their heads. For men, narrow ties and lapel pins can add that extra touch of sophistication to any outfit.

4. Play with Patterns and Prints

The 1960s were all about experimenting with bold patterns, prints, and colors. Psychedelic designs like swirling paisley or dancing flowers dominated the fashion landscape during this period, and are excellent choices for making a statement with your ensemble. Autumnal hues like burnt orange, mustard yellow, and rich burgundy will give you that classic ’60s feel without being overly vibrant. Be sure to balance your outfit with solids to keep it looking fresh and modern rather than overly retro.

With these tips in mind, you can create the perfect 1960s-inspired wardrobe that not only pays homage to the iconic decade but also infuses your personal style with a touch of nostalgia. Now go forth and release your inner Flower Child!
