4 Ways to Clean Up the Rotting Smell in Your Garbage Disposal

A clean kitchen is a happy kitchen, but when your garbage disposal starts emanating a rotting smell, it can quickly turn the atmosphere sour. While garbage disposals are designed to keep waste contained and prevent foul odors from spreading, they can occasionally be the culprits of awful smells themselves, especially if you don’t maintain them properly. Luckily, there are several methods to rid your garbage disposal of bad smells, keeping your kitchen fresh and inviting. Here are four ways to clean up that rotting smell in your garbage disposal.

1. Try Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits not only offer a refreshing scent but also contain natural acids and oils that help eliminate bad odors. To clean up the smelly garbage disposal using citrus fruits, simply cut lemons, limes, oranges, or grapefruits into small pieces and drop them into the disposal one by one. Turn on the unit and let it run until all the fruit bits are completely flushed through. The citrus rinds act as a natural scraper for removing buildup and also leave behind a pleasant aroma.

2. Use Baking Soda and Vinegar

Baking soda and vinegar are two household cleaning powerhouses that can deodorize your garbage disposal effectively. Start by pouring half a cup of baking soda down the drain followed by one cup of household white vinegar. Allow the mixture to react for about 10-15 minutes, producing bubbles and foam as it loosens grime inside the disposal. Follow up with hot water to flush everything away, leaving your disposal smelling fresh.

3. Ice and Rock Salt

For stubborn smells that persist even after trying other methods, ice and rock salt can help break down grease buildup in your garbage disposal. Fill your unit halfway with ice cubes then add about half a cup of rock salt (or coarse kosher salt). Run the garbage disposal with cold water for at least 30 seconds. The abrasiveness of the ice and salt helps scour the grime from the disposal blades and surrounding surfaces, leaving it clean and fresh.

4. Clean the Splash Guard

The rubber splash guard at the mouth of your garbage disposal can harbor trapped food debris that could be causing unwanted smells. To clean it, turn off your garbage disposal and remove the guard if it’s detachable or use a toothbrush or small brush to scrub away any visible gunk from both sides of the guard. Rinse thoroughly with warm soapy water before reinstalling it to ensure a thorough cleaning.

Conclusion

Maintaining a clean garbage disposal is vital for keeping your kitchen free from offensive odors.
By following these simple steps, you can easily eliminate any rotting smell from your garbage disposal and maintain a fresh and inviting kitchen atmosphere. Just remember always to keep safety in mind: never put your hand or utensils in the garbage disposal while it’s running, and always unplug or disconnect power sources before attempting any in-depth cleaning or maintenance tasks.
