4 Ways to Catch a Gecko

Geckos are fascinating and harmless creatures that can be found in various environments. While these helpful creatures prey on insects and help maintain a healthy ecosystem, sometimes it becomes necessary to catch a gecko for relocation or as part of a pest control strategy. Here are four effective ways to catch a gecko.

1. Use a Humane Gecko Trap

One of the most effective ways to catch geckos is by using a humane gecko trap. These traps usually have sticky surfaces that geckos cling to once they come into contact with it. Place the trap near areas where you have noticed gecko activity (e.g. walls, ceilings, or window sills). Check the traps regularly; once you have caught the gecko, carefully remove it from the sticky surface using vegetable oil to loosen its grip. Ensure that you release it in a suitable location away from your home.

2. Jar Trapping Technique

Another simple and harmless method to catch a gecko is by using the jar trapping technique. Prepare an empty glass jar and place a small piece of fruit inside (such as banana or mango) to attract the gecko. Cover the opening of the jar with a plastic wrap secured by a rubber band, and poke small holes on the plastic for air circulation. Place the jar close to where the geckos have been seen and wait for them to get lured inside by the aroma of the fruit. Once you notice a gecko inside, remove the plastic wrap and quickly secure the jar’s lid before releasing it at an appropriate location.

3. Hand Capture

Catching a gecko with your hands may seem challenging, but if approached carefully and gently, it can be done without harming them. Locate the gecko and approach it slowly and quietly, maintaining considerable patience while doing so. Geckos can move quite fast, so line up your hand carefully before attempting the grab. Once in hand, hold the gecko gently but firmly and take care not to squeeze too hard, as it can cause injury. Immediately transport the gecko to a new location for release.

4. DIY Cardboard Box Trap

A DIY cardboard box trap can also aid in catching a gecko. Cut an opening into one side of a small cardboard box, place a piece of fruit inside as bait, and prop the open side up with a stick tied to a long string. Position the trap near areas where geckos are known to be active. Monitor the trap from a distance and wait for the gecko to be lured in by the scent of the fruit. When you see the gecko enter, swiftly pull on the string to secure it within the box and carefully relocate it.

Remember that catching geckos should be done humanely, and they should always be released unharmed in a suitable habitat. By following these methods, you can successfully catch and relocate geckos without causing them any harm or distress.
