Introduction

Barbecuing is one of life’s simple pleasures, and nothing beats the satisfying feeling of cooking up some mouth-watering delights on a BBQ pit you’ve built yourself. There are various ways to build a BBQ pit, depending on your requirements, budget, and skills. In this article, we’ll explore four different ways to build a BBQ pit for your outdoor cooking adventures.

1. Simple Brick BBQ Pit

The most straightforward design is a simple brick BBQ pit. This design is affordable and easy to construct. A brick BBQ pit requires minimal materials and tools, which makes it an excellent choice for beginners or those on a budget.

Materials required:

– Bricks

– Metal grill

– Mortar

– Concrete

– Rebar

Steps:

a) Choose a suitable location for your BBQ pit.

b) Dig out the foundation and create a concrete base.

c) Lay out the bricks using mortar to create walls for your pit.

d) Create a rebar grid to reinforce the structure.

e) Add more rows of bricks and finish it off with a top layer.

f) Place your metal grill on top.

2. 55-Gallon Drum BBQ Pit

Repurposing an old 55-gallon steel drum can be an economical way to build a fantastic BBQ pit. The large capacity of the drum allows for plenty of cooking space and adds a unique touch to your outdoor space.

Materials required:

– 55-gallon steel drum

– Metal hinges

– Bolts and nuts

– Metal grates/grill

– Metal paint (heat-resistant)

Steps:

a) Obtain and clean the 55-gallon drum thoroughly.

b) Cut open one side of the drum to make it usable as a BBQ pit.

c) Attach hinges to connect the lid with the main body of the drum.

d) Forge holes for ventilation on both sides of the drum and on the lid.

e) Place the metal grates/grill inside the drum.

f) Coat the exterior with heat-resistant paint for added durability.

3. Stone BBQ Pit

A stone BBQ pit is an aesthetically pleasing and durable addition to any outdoor space. The natural look of stone blends seamlessly with your backyard’s landscaping, and its robust nature ensures the pit will last for years to come.

Materials required:

– Stones or rocks

– Metal grate

– Concrete

– Mortar

Steps:

a) Select a suitable location for your stone BBQ pit.

b) Create a concrete base for added stability.

c) Arrange stones in a circular or square pattern using mortar.

d) Gradually build up the walls of your stone pit, ensuring it remains stable.

e) Once you have reached your desired height, place a metal grate on top.

4. Cinder Block BBQ Pit

Cinder blocks are another inexpensive material option when building a BBQ pit. The easy-to-use nature of cinder blocks makes them an excellent choice for DIY enthusiasts with minimal construction experience.

Materials required:

– Cinder blocks (with holes)

– Metal grate

– Concrete

Steps:

a) Locate an appropriate site for your BBQ pit.

b) Pour a concrete base to provide stability to your cinder block pit.

c) Lay out cinder blocks in your desired configuration, either square or rectangular.

d) Continue stacking cinder blocks until you reach your preferred height, leaving gaps for air circulation.

e) Add a metal grate on top of the structure to complete your pit.

Conclusion

Building your own BBQ pit can be an enjoyable and rewarding project, adding a unique touch to your outdoor cooking area. With various designs available, there are options to suit every budget and skill level. Choose one of these four ways and enjoy
