4 Ways to Be a Good Flyer in Cheerleading

As the person elevated into the air during stunts, a flyer plays a crucial role in executing cheerleading routines with precision and grace. A good flyer possesses a unique blend of skills that make them reliable and adaptable in pressure moments. Here are four ways to become a good flyer in cheerleading.

1. Build Trust with Your Bases and Spotters

Developing trust with your bases (the teammates supporting you) and spotters (those ensuring your safety) is essential for performing stunts smoothly. Invest time in getting to know your teammates on a personal level, as strong bonds foster trust and collaboration. Regular communication, like discussing goals and progress, can also help create a supportive environment. Practicing together frequently will boost confidence levels among team members, leading to improved performances.

2. Enhance Flexibility and Balance

A good flyer must be flexible and have a strong sense of balance. Regularly practice stretches for your hamstrings, hips, back, and shoulders to maintain flexibility. Yoga and Pilates are effective exercises to enhance both balance and flexibility. They train your core muscles, which are key for maintaining control during lifts and aerial transitions.

3. Develop Body Awareness

Being aware of your body movements, along with having control over them, helps set apart great flyers from good ones. Practice technique drills that focus on core engagement, body alignment, leg tightening, and toe pointing. Strengthening these fundamentals will provide better execution during stunts.

Additionally, pay attention to how you distribute weight across your base’s hands during lifts. Minimizing unnecessary motion during stunts reduces the burden on your teammates below you.

4. Stay Calm Under Pressure

Flyers often perform high-flying routines under immense pressure with all eyes on them—an intimidating task for even the most experienced athletes. Staying calm in such situations is vital for preventing errors during performances. Develop mental strategies to stay composed, like visualization exercises or mantra repetition. Breathing techniques can also help reduce anxiety and maintain a steady focus.

In conclusion, becoming a good flyer in cheerleading requires building trust with your team, enhancing flexibility and balance, developing body awareness, and staying calm under pressure. Balancing these skills will not only make you a better flyer but also contribute to the overall performance of your squad. So, gear up and soar high with confidence!
