4 Ways to Alleviate Vertigo

Introduction:

Vertigo is a common condition characterised by dizziness, unsteadiness, and a spinning sensation. It can negatively impact a person’s daily life and lead to accidents if not managed effectively. Here, we will discuss four ways to alleviate vertigo, so you can regain your balance and feel confident in your surroundings.

1. Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT)

Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy is a specialised form of physical therapy that focuses on restoring the body’s vestibular system, which is responsible for maintaining balance and coordinating spatial movement. VRT involves performing specific exercises designed to reduce dizziness and improve overall stability. These exercises may include head movements, eye tracking, balancing activities, and walking patterns. Consult with a professional therapist for a personalised exercise plan suited to your needs.

2. Medication

Various medications may be prescribed to manage the symptoms of vertigo. Over-the-counter motion sickness medications such as dimenhydrinate (Dramamine) and meclizine (Antivert) may help in reducing dizziness and nausea. However, these should only be used upon the recommendation of a healthcare professional as they may cause side effects or interact with other medications.

3. Canalith Repositioning Procedure (CRP) or Epley Maneuver

The Epley Maneuver is an effective treatment for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), which occurs when calcium particles within the inner ear become dislodged and disrupt the normal functioning of balance sensors. The Epley Maneuver helps reposition these particles back into their correct location through gentle head movements guided by a healthcare professional or physical therapist. This non-invasive procedure has been proven to provide significant relief from vertigo symptoms in many cases.

4. Lifestyle Changes

Adopting specific lifestyle changes may help prevent recurrence of vertigo episodes and improve overall quality of life. Consider the following adjustments:

a. Maintain a consistent sleep schedule to ensure your body remains well-rested.

b. Limit alcohol and caffeine consumption as these substances may worsen vertigo symptoms.

c. Stay hydrated to maintain proper electrolyte balance, contributing to better inner ear health.

d. Manage stress through relaxation techniques such as yoga, mindfulness, or deep breathing exercises.

Conclusion:

Vertigo can be a debilitating condition, but there are several ways to alleviate its symptoms and improve your daily life. Consult your healthcare professional about implementing vestibular rehabilitation therapy, medications, canalith repositioning procedures, or making lifestyle changes tailored to your specific needs. By taking control of your vertigo symptoms, you can regain balance and enjoy life without fear of unexpected dizziness episodes.
