4 Simple Ways to Move Heavy Furniture Upstairs

Moving heavy furniture upstairs can be a challenging and strenuous task. Whether it’s a bulky couch or a massive wardrobe, maneuvering large items up the staircase can seem daunting. However, with the right techniques and equipment, you can safely and efficiently transport your furniture to its desired location.

Here are four simple ways to make moving heavy furniture upstairs painless and worry-free:

1. Use Furniture Sliders

Furniture sliders are a fantastic tool for moving heavy items without causing damage to your floors or walls. These small pads are placed beneath the legs of your furniture, allowing you to effortlessly slide the item across surfaces. To move your furniture upstairs, place sliders under each leg and push gently. You’ll be amazed at how smoothly and easily your furniture will glide up the stairs.

2. Employ the Shoulder Dolly Method

A shoulder dolly is a lifting strap designed to distribute weight evenly across your shoulders and back, making lifting heavy objects much more manageable. To use a shoulder dolly, have one person stand on each side of the item, with the straps wrapped around their shoulders like harnesses. Then, work together to lift and carry the furniture up the stairs with minimal strain.

3. Take Advantage of Moving Blankets

Another useful tool when moving heavy objects is a moving blanket. Thick padded blankets can not only protect your furniture from scratches but can also be used as makeshift sliders when going up stairs. Wrap your item completely in moving blankets, folding any excess material underneath, so there’s extra padding between it and the floor. Then, using teamwork, shimmy the item up the stairs as you would if using sliders.

4. Dismantle Your Furniture

Breaking down large pieces of furniture into smaller components will make moving them upstairs significantly easier. For instance, if you’re relocating a cumbersome bed frame, start by disassembling it into separate parts, like the headboard, footboard, and side rails. You can also remove cushions and pillows from sofas and chairs to make them more lightweight for transport. Once you’ve carried the individual components upstairs, reassemble the furniture in its new location.

While moving heavy furniture upstairs can initially seem like an overwhelming task, using these four methods will simplify the process and keep your belongings safe during transit. Invest in some essential moving tools like furniture sliders and shoulder dollies, take extra care to protect your items with moving blankets, and break down larger pieces into manageable sections. With a little bit of planning and teamwork, you’ll have your heavy furniture in its new spot in no time.
