Covering buttons in fabric is an easy and creative way to add a personal touch to your clothing, accessories, and home decor. This simple DIY technique can be used to match buttons to a specific fabric or create contrasting accents. In this article, we’ll explore four simple methods for covering buttons in fabric, helping you make eye-catching and unique pieces in no time.

1. Hand Sewn Fabric Buttons

Materials:

– Fabric

– Buttons

– Needle and thread

– Scissors

Instructions:

1. Cut a circle of fabric approximately twice the diameter of your button.

2. Thread your needle and tie a knot at the end of the thread.

3. With the fabric circle facing downwards, sew a running stitch around the edge of the circle.

4. Place the button in the center of the fabric circle and pull on the thread, gathering the fabric around the button.

5. Stitch back and forth through the gathered fabric to secure it tightly around the button.

6. Tie off your thread and trim any excess.

2. Fabric-Covered Button Kits

Materials:

– Fabric

– Button-covering kit (Available at most craft stores)

– Scissors

Instructions:

1. Cut a circle of fabric according to the size specified on your button-covering kit.

2. Follow the instructions provided with your kit, which typically involve placing the fabric over the button-top mold, pushing it into place with a pusher, and snapping the button-back into place.

3. Glue-On Fabric Buttons

Materials:

– Fabric

– Buttons

– Fabric glue or hot glue gun

– Scissors

Instructions:

1. Cut a circle of fabric approximately twice the diameter of your button.

2. Apply some glue on top of your button.

3. Center the fabric circle on top of your button, then press firmly on its edges to smooth out any wrinkles or folds.

4. Fold the excess fabric around the edges of your button towards the back, gluing the fabric in place.

5. Allow the glue to dry completely before using your newly covered button.

4. No-Sew Fabric Buttons

Materials:

– Fabric

– Buttons with shanks (the loop on the back of the button)

– Scissors

– Hair elastic or rubber band

Instructions:

1. Cut a circle of fabric approximately twice the diameter of your button.

2. Place your button in the center of the fabric circle, with the shank facing downwards.

3. Tightly slip a hair elastic or rubber band around the fabric, firmly holding it in place against the shank of your button.

4. Carefully trim any excess fabric, being careful not to cut too close to your hair elastic or rubber band.

With these four simple techniques, anyone can create elegant and custom-covered buttons for their unique fabric projects. Experiment with different textures, patterns, and colors to add that extra touch to your DIY garments, accessories, and home decor items.
