3 Ways to Winterize Calla Lily Bulbs

Calla lilies, known for their elegant trumpet-shaped blooms and vibrant colors, are a popular choice for gardens and floral arrangements. However, these beautiful plants are susceptible to damage from cold winter temperatures, particularly in zones lower than 8. To help your calla lilies survive the winter months and continue to bloom every year, it’s essential to take the necessary steps to protect and preserve their bulbs. Below, we discuss three effective ways to winterize your calla lily bulbs.

1. Digging Up and Storing Calla Lily Bulbs

One of the best ways to keep your calla lily bulbs safe during winter is to dig them up and store them.

– Wait for the leaves of the plant to turn yellow and wither in late fall.

– Gently dig around the bulbs, taking care not to damage them, and lift them from the ground.

– Remove excess soil and let the bulbs dry for a few days in a well-ventilated area.

– Wrap each bulb individually in newspaper or place them in a mesh bag.

– Store wrapped bulbs in a dark, cool (45-55°F), and dry location such as a garage or basement.

2. Insulating Bulbs in The Ground

If you live in an area with relatively mild winters or prefer not to dig up your calla lily bulbs every year, you can insulate planted bulbs to protect them from frost.

– Add a 4-6 inches thick layer of mulch like straw, hay, or shredded bark on top of the soil around the calla lily plants after the foliage has died back.

– The mulch layer will help trap heat and keep moisture levels consistent throughout the winter months.

– Once spring arrives and temperatures start to rise consistently above freezing, remove the mulch layer so that new growth can begin.

3. Growing Calla Lilies in Containers

Another option for winterizing calla lily bulbs is to grow them in containers, which make it easier to move the plants to a safe, protected spot for the winter.

– Choose a well-draining potting mix and ensure that the container has drainage holes.

– Plant calla lily bulbs in containers during spring or early summer, following the manufacturer’s guidelines for depth and spacing.

– Once temperatures start dropping in autumn, move the pot indoors to a cool, dry location (45-55°F) and reduce watering.

– Monitor your bulbs’ growth. When new shoots appear in spring, gradually increase water, and move the container back outside once temperatures consistently remain above freezing.

By following these three methods for winterizing your calla lily bulbs, you can ensure that your plants thrive year after year, gracing your garden or home with their stunning blooms each season.
