3 Ways to Unclog an Overflowing Toilet

Introduction:

An overflowing toilet is one of the most frustrating and unhygienic household emergencies. It can cause panic, damage floors, and lead to an embarrassing situation. However, you don’t have to call in a plumber immediately. Various unclogging methods are available that can be attempted before resorting to professional help. This article will outline three ways to unclog an overflowing toilet.

Method 1: Use a Plunger

The plunger is the most popular and accessible tool for unclogging toilets. Here’s how to use it effectively:

1. Put on gloves and find an appropriate plunger, such as a flange or bellows-type plunger.

2. Insert the plunger into the bowl, ensuring the rubber part covers the hole entirely.

3. Gently push down and pull up with force to create suction.

4. Repeat this process multiple times until the water level starts decreasing, indicating that the clog has been dislodged.

Method 2: Pour Hot Water and Dish Soap

The combination of hot water and dish soap can help break down any solid waste or debris blocking your toilet drain.

Follow these steps:

1. Boil 1 gallon of water, then allow it to cool slightly.

2. Add one or two squirts of dish soap into the toilet bowl.

3. Slowly pour the hot water into the bowl from waist-height — this will create pressure and help dissolve stubborn clogs.

4. Allow some time for this mixture to sit before attempting another flush.

5. If successful, flush, making sure everything clears away properly.

Method 3: Use a Toilet Auger

A toilet auger (also known as a closet auger) is a specialized plumbing tool designed for clearing clogs in toilets specifically:

1. Insert the end of the auger into the toilet drain hole with its protective rubber sleeve in place to avoid scratching the porcelain.

2. Crank the handle in a clockwise direction, which will extend the cable into the drainpipe—this may either break up or grab hold of the clog.

3. Once you’ve reached resistance, try cranking counter-clockwise while pulling the auger out to remove the clog or break it down.

4. Flush the toilet and check that it’s draining efficiently.

Conclusion:

An overflowing toilet can be a daunting issue, but with these three effective methods, you’ll increase your chances of clearing the clog on your own. Remember to exercise caution and patience when attempting to unclog an overflowing toilet, and always enlist professional help if necessary or when dealing with a recurring problem.
