3 Ways to Test a Refrigerator PTC Relay

Introduction:

The refrigerator PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) relay is a crucial component that helps in starting the compressor and maintaining its operation. It is responsible for providing power to the compressor, allowing it to function effectively. A faulty PTC relay can result in improper cooling or complete failure of the refrigerator.

Therefore, it’s essential to test your refrigerator’s PTC relay periodically to ensure its proper functioning. In this article, we will discuss three methods to test a refrigerator PTC relay.

Method 1: Visual Inspection

Before conducting advanced tests involving technical equipment, start by inspecting the PTC relay for visible signs of damage. Follow these steps:

1. Unplug your refrigerator from the power source to ensure your safety.

2. Locate the PTC relay, which is usually found attached to the side of the compressor.

3. Remove the PTC relay from the compressor by gently pulling it off.

4. Visually inspect the relay for any signs of burns, melted plastic, or cracked casing, which could indicate a faulty component.

If any apparent damage is discovered during your visual inspection, replace the PTC relay immediately.

Method 2: Resistance Test

An ohmmeter can be used to check for electrical continuity in your PTC relay.

1. Set up your multimeter in ohmmeter mode and ensure it reads zero.

2. Place one probe on each terminal of the PTC relay.

3. Check the resistance reading on your multimeter.

A functioning PTC relay should display low resistance (close to zero ohms) when tested with an ohmmeter. If there is no change in resistance or if it reads a high value, replace the PTC relay as it might be defective.

Method 3: Shaking Test

This simple test involves shaking the PTC relay gently and listening for any unusual noises within it.

1. Hold the PTC relay close to your ear.

2. Gently shake the relay and listen for any rattling or clicking sounds.

3. If you hear an unusual rattling noise, this could indicate that the PTC relay’s internal components have broken or failed.

In such cases, it would be best to replace the PTC relay with a new one.

Conclusion:

Regular testing of your refrigerator’s PTC relay ensures that your appliance functions efficiently and minimizes the risk of compressor failure. By following these three methods for testing a refrigerator PTC relay, you can identify potential problems early and take appropriate actions to maintain optimal performance. Remember always to disconnect power from your refrigerator before conducting any tests to ensure your safety.
