3 Ways to Survive a Lightning Strike

Introduction:

Lightning strikes can be a frightening and dangerous natural phenomenon, with the power to cause severe damage, injury, or even death. However, there are steps you can take to minimize the risk and increase your chances of survival if you find yourself caught in a lightning storm. In this article, we will explore three ways to survive a lightning strike and stay safe during thunderstorms.

1. Find Safe Shelter

The best way to survive a lightning strike is to avoid being outside during a thunderstorm altogether. If you hear thunder or see lightning, immediately seek shelter indoors or in a closed metal-topped vehicle. Avoid open structures such as pavilions, picnic shelters, or porches that do not offer sufficient protection.

Once inside, stay away from windows, doors, and electrical equipment that could conduct electricity. Do not use corded telephones or take a bath or shower during the storm.

If you are unable to find an appropriate shelter while outdoors, seek refuge in low-lying areas such as valleys or ditches, but avoid standing near tall trees or bodies of water.

2. Adopt the Lightning Crouch

If you find yourself outside with no shelter in sight and feel an imminent lightning strike (e.g., your hair stands on end), assume the “lightning crouch” position in order to lessen your chances of being fatally struck.

To perform the lightning crouch:

– Squat down low with your feet close together
– Place your hands over your ears and tuck your head down
– Minimize contact with the ground by resting on the balls of your feet

This position aims to reduce your height and overall contact with the ground while allowing any potential lightning current to pass through your body without causing significant harm.

3. Wait 30 Minutes after the Last Thunderclap

It’s important to wait at least 30 minutes after the last audible thunderclap before resuming outdoor activities to ensure the lightning storm has passed. Many people make the mistake of assuming the storm is over too soon, resulting in injuries and fatalities.

In Conclusion:

Surviving a lightning strike is all about taking the necessary precautions to protect yourself during a storm. By finding safe shelter, adopting the lightning crouch if caught outdoors, and waiting for the storm to pass, you can greatly increase your chances of remaining unharmed by this powerful force of nature. Stay safe and always respect the power of lightning during thunderstorms!
