3 Ways to Store Plums

Spread the love

Plums are delicious, juicy fruits that pack a punch of vitamins and minerals, making them a popular choice for many fruit lovers. However, because of their delicate nature, plums can go bad quickly if not stored properly. In this article, we’ll explore three ways to store plums and maintain their freshness for longer periods.

1. Storing Fresh Plums in the Refrigerator

If you intend to consume the plums within a few days, the refrigerator is an excellent option for maintaining their freshness. To store plums in the refrigerator:

– Place unwashed plums in a plastic bag or an airtight container.

– Keep the container on the top shelf of the refrigerator (which is typically cooler), away from strong-smelling foods.

– Check on the plums periodically and remove any that have gone bad to prevent the spread of mold or rotting.

With proper refrigeration, plums can remain fresh for up to one week.

2. Freezing Plums for Long-Term Storage

For those who want to enjoy plums year-round or want to preserve a large harvest, freezing is an ideal method. To freeze plums:

– Wash the plums thoroughly and remove any stickers or labels.

– Cut each plum in half, remove the pit, and arrange the halves in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

– Place the baking sheet in the freezer for a couple of hours until the plum halves are frozen solid.

– Transfer frozen plum halves into airtight bags or containers and label them with the date.

Frozen plums can be stored for up to one year but are best consumed within six months to ensure optimal taste and texture.

3. Drying Plums for Snacking and Baking Purposes

Drying plums is another excellent preservation method perfect for those who love snacking on dried fruits or using them in baking recipes. To dry plums:

– Wash and pit the plums before slicing them in half.

– Arrange the plum halves on a wire rack or a dehydrator tray, ensuring they don’t touch each other.

– Use either a food dehydrator or the lowest-temperature setting of your oven to dry the plum halves for several hours until they reach the desired texture – slightly soft and chewy.

Once plums are dried, store them in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Dried plums can last up to six months when stored correctly.

In conclusion, storing plums correctly is essential for preserving their freshness and flavor. Whether you prefer refrigerating, freezing, or drying your plums, each method has its advantages and suits different preferences and needs. Enjoy your delicious plums year-round by following these simple storage tips!
