3 Ways to Season Salmon

Salmon is not only a delicious fish, but it’s also packed with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids and essential nutrients. When it comes to cooking this verstaile fish, you may wonder how to enhance its natural flavors without masking them. Seasoning your salmon can make all the difference between a bland dish and a spectacular one. In this article, we give an overview of three ways to season salmon that will elevate your culinary skills and take the flavor of your dish up a notch.

1. Lemon, Garlic, and Dill Marinade

Combining lemon, garlic, and dill is a classic way to enhance the taste of salmon. This trio of ingredients perfectly complements the natural flavor profile of the fish without overpowering it.

Ingredients:

– Juice of 1 lemon

– 2 cloves garlic, minced

– 2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped

– Salt and pepper, to taste

– Olive oil

Instructions:

In a small bowl, whisk together the lemon juice, minced garlic, chopped dill, salt, and pepper. Add enough olive oil to create a marinade-like consistency. Coat your salmon in the mixture and let it marinate for at least 30 minutes up to a few hours before cooking.

2. Cajun Spice Rub

If you’re craving a bit more heat or looking for an alternative way to serve salmon at your next barbecue, try this spicy Cajun rub.

Ingredients:

– 1 tablespoon paprika

– 1 tablespoon garlic powder

– 1 tablespoon onion powder

– ½ tablespoon cayenne pepper

– ½ tablespoon black pepper

– Salt to taste

Instructions:

Mix all spices in a small bowl until well combined. Pat your salmon dry with paper towels before evenly applying the spice rub on both sides of the fillet. Let it sit for about 15 minutes to enable proper absorption of the spices.

3. Honey-Mustard Glaze

For those who enjoy a blend of sweet and tangy flavors, this honey-mustard glaze is a perfect choice. The sweetness of the honey and the tangy taste of the mustard create a delicious balance on your salmon fillets.

Ingredients:

– 3 tablespoons honey

– 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard

– 2 tablespoons whole-grain mustard

– Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

In a small bowl, combine honey, both types of mustard, salt, and pepper. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Brush an even layer of glaze onto the top of your salmon fillet before cooking (whether grilling, pan-searing, or baking).

These three methods of seasoning salmon showcase different aspects of the fish’s flavor profile while adding unique twists to each preparation style. Experiment with these techniques (and perhaps even mix-and-match components from each) to find your favorite way to enjoy this delicious and nutritious fish.
