3 Ways to Ride the Bus in London

Introduction

Navigating public transportation in a bustling city like London can be daunting at first, especially when it comes to riding buses. However, once you know what you’re doing, you’ll find that London’s bus network is efficient, convenient and easy to use. To help ease your transition into becoming a savvy city commuter, we’ve compiled a list of three ways to ride the bus in London.

1. Using an Oyster Card

The most popular way to pay for bus rides in London is by using an Oyster Card. This smart card allows you to hold both pay-as-you-go credit and Travelcard season tickets. The credit on your card will be automatically deducted each time you travel, so all you have to do is tap your card on the yellow card reader as you board the bus and then again upon exiting. Additionally, using an Oyster Card ensures that you get the lowest fare possible for your journey.

To obtain an Oyster Card, you can either order one online or purchase one at any Tube station, various Oyster Ticket Stops, or select retailers in the city. You can top up your card balance online as well as at ticket machines and various locations throughout London.

2. Paying with Contactless

For those who prefer not to use an Oyster Card, contactless payment options are available on all buses in London. Contactless enables travelers to pay for their journey using a contactless bank card or a mobile payment app like Apple Pay or Google Wallet.

To ride the bus using contactless payment, simply tap your enabled card or mobile device on the yellow card reader when boarding the bus – no need to tap out upon exiting. The fare will be charged directly to your connected bank account. Just like with an Oyster Card, contactless payments offer the same fare savings.

3. Booking Online or via Apps

London’s buses are also accessible through various online booking platforms and smartphone apps. Apps like Citymapper and Transport for London’s own travel app allow you to plan your route and access bus schedules, allowing you to know when your bus is going to arrive. Some apps even allow you to purchase tickets through the app, which can often be more cost-effective than contactless payment options for regular commuters.

Conclusion

When it comes to getting around London, riding the bus becomes a breeze once you’re familiar with the variety of payment options available. Whether you choose to use an Oyster Card, contactless payments, or online booking platforms, each method will have its own advantages and convenience factors. Give them all a try and soon enough, you’ll find your own preferred way of navigating the city like a true Londoner!
