3 Ways to Make Straight Hair Into Afro Hair

Introduction:

Afro hair, also known as kinky or coily hair, is known for its unique texture and appearance. It is a natural hair type for people of African descent and has become a symbol of pride, beauty, and self-expression. If you have naturally straight hair but want to achieve the afro look temporarily, there are several methods you can try. In this article, we will explore three ways to transform your straight hair into afro hair.

1. Straw Set:

A straw set is an excellent method for achieving tight curls that mimic the look of afro hair. To do this at home, you’ll need drinking straws and small hair elastics.

– Start by washing and conditioning your hair and then towel dry it.

– Section your damp hair and apply a styling mousse or gel to each section.

– Take a small section of hair, about 1 inch wide, and wrap it around a drinking straw. Start from the ends and work your way up to the roots.

– Secure the wrapped straw with a small elastic at the roots.

– Repeat this process until all of your hair is wrapped around straws.

– Allow your hair to air dry completely or use a hooded dryer on low heat to speed up the process.

Once your hair is completely dry, carefully remove the straws one by one, revealing tight spiral curls. Gently fluff them out using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb for a more natural afro look.

2. Bantu Knots:

Bantu knots, also known as Zulu knots, are an ancient African hairstyle that can help create an afro-like appearance on straight hair.

– Begin by parting clean, damp hair into evenly-sized square sections (about 2 inches wide).

– Apply a styling gel or cream to each section as you go.

– Twist each section of hair until it creates a tight coil, then wrap the coil around itself to form a small knot.

– Secure the knot either by tucking the ends under the knot or using a hairpin.

– Continue this process until all sections are formed into Bantu knots.

– Allow your hair to dry completely, either by air drying or using a hooded dryer on low heat.

When your hair is fully dry, gently unravel each knot and separate the curls to achieve the desired afro effect.

3. Perm Rods:

Perm rods are another tool that can help you achieve an afro hairstyle on straight hair. They come in various sizes, allowing you to choose how tight or loose you want your curls to be.

– Start with freshly washed and conditioned hair, and apply a setting lotion or gel.

– Section your damp hair and begin wrapping small sections around perm rods, starting from the ends and working your way up to the roots.

– Secure the perm rod at the roots using a hair elastic or rod clasp.

– Repeat this process until all of your hair is wound around perm rods.

– Allow your hair to dry fully, either naturally or using a hooded dryer.

Once dry, gently remove the perm rods one by one, revealing coiled curls. Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to separate and fluff out the curls for an afro-style finish.

Conclusion:

While these methods offer temporary results for turning straight hair into afro hair, make sure to take care of your tresses throughout the process. Regular moisturizing and deep conditioning treatments can help maintain your hair’s health while experimenting with new styles. So go ahead and have fun trying out these different techniques to create an eye-catching afro look!
