Introduction:

A grease fire can be a serious and dangerous situation, as it can quickly spread and cause severe damage if not dealt with immediately. It’s essential to learn how to safely extinguish a grease fire to protect yourself and your home. In this article, we will discuss three effective ways to put out a grease fire.

1. Use A Metal Lid or Cookie Sheet

One of the simplest and most effective ways to put out a grease fire is by using a metal lid or cookie sheet. It’s crucial to remember that water should never be used on a grease fire, as it can cause the flames to spread rapidly. Follow these steps when using a metal lid or cookie sheet:

– Turn off the heat source immediately.

– Carefully place the metal lid or cookie sheet over the pan, covering the flaming area completely.

– Leave the lid or cookie sheet in place until the fire has been completely extinguished and the pan has cooled down.

2. Use Salt or Baking Soda

Using salt or baking soda can help smother and extinguish a grease fire. Note that you should not use other kitchen items like flour or sugar, which can make the fire worse. The procedure for using salt or baking soda is as follows:

– Turn off the heat source immediately.

– Pour salt or baking soda generously over the flames, being mindful of your own safety while doing so.

– Continue adding salt or baking soda until the fire is completely extinguished.

3. Use a Fire Extinguisher

Having a Class B fire extinguisher in your home is essential for dealing with grease fires effectively and safely. Class B extinguishers are specifically designed to put out fires fueled by flammable liquids like oil and grease. To use a fire extinguisher on a grease fire:

– Stand at least 5 feet away from the fire with your back facing an escape route.

– Pull the pin from the extinguisher.

– Aim at the base of the flames, close to the pan or heat source.

– Squeeze the handle to release extinguishing agent, using a sweeping motion to cover all areas of the fire until it’s out.

Conclusion

Grease fires are dangerous and require immediate action. By knowing these three methods and acting quickly, you can safely put out a grease fire and prevent further damage to your home. Always remember to practice cooking safety, keep a Class B fire extinguisher in your home, and never use water on a grease fire.
