Introduction:

Griptape is a crucial component of a skateboard, providing traction and allowing for optimal control while performing tricks and maneuvers. Applying griptape can be a daunting task for beginners, but with the right techniques, you can have your board ready in no time. In this article, we will explore three methods of putting griptape on your skateboard.

Method 1: Traditional Application

1.Begin by removing any existing griptape from the skateboard deck. Make sure the surface is clean and free of debris before proceeding.

2.Measure and cut a piece of griptape that is slightly larger than your deck.

3.Carefully peel off the backing from the griptape, exposing the adhesive side.

4.Align one edge of the griptape with the nose or tail of the skateboard (whichever you prefer) and gently lay it down onto the deck.

5.Using your hands, smooth out any air bubbles or wrinkles that may form in the process.

6.With a sharp object such as a utility knife or razor blade, carefully trim away excess griptape by following the edge of the deck.

7.Use a file or sandpaper to further smooth and shape the edges for a clean finish.

Method 2: Cut-out Designs

1.Follow steps 1-6 from the traditional application method.

2.Instead of applying one solid sheet of griptape, cut out various shapes and designs from different colored griptape sheets to personalize your skateboard.

3.Arrange your cut-out designs on the deck as desired before pressing them firmly into place using your hands.

4.Gently remove any air bubbles with additional pressure or using a roller tool if necessary.

5.Trim away any overlapping sections for a seamless look.

Method 3: Spray-on Griptape

1.Clean your skateboard deck, ensuring it is free of any debris or existing griptape.

2.Mask off the area that you do not want to be covered in griptape using painter’s tape or a similar protective material.

3.In a well-ventilated area, apply the spray-on griptape as directed by the manufacturer, maintaining a steady distance and motion to ensure even coverage.

4.Once the griptape has dried to the touch (usually within 30 minutes to an hour), gently remove the masking tape.

5.Allow the griptape to cure completely before using your skateboard (typically between 24 and 48 hours).

Conclusion:

Putting griptape on your skateboard is an essential step for both safety and performance. By following one of these three methods, you can apply griptape with ease and ensure that your board is ready for action. Don’t be afraid to get creative with cut-out designs or try the convenience of spray-on griptape when customizing your skateboard!
