3 Ways to Protect Your Cherry Trees from Birds

Cherry trees are not only known for their beautiful spring blossoms but also for their delicious and juicy fruits. Unfortunately, these attractive trees tend to attract unwanted attention from birds. Birds can ravage a cherry tree’s fruit in no time, leaving the gardener with little to show for their hard work. But don’t worry, there are effective solutions! Here are three ways to protect your cherry trees from birds:

1. Use bird netting

One of the most effective ways to protect your cherry trees from birds is by using bird netting. Bird netting is a mesh-like material designed to cover your tree without causing any harm to the plant or the birds. The small holes in the netting prevent birds from accessing the tree’s branches and fruits while allowing sunlight, water, and air circulation to reach the plant.

When installing bird netting, make sure it’s properly secured and covers the entire tree canopy. Use stakes or poles to keep it in place and ensure that there are no gaps where birds can enter. Regularly inspect the netting for any signs of wear and tear, replacing it as necessary.

2. Install bird deterrents

Another way to protect your cherry trees from birds is by installing bird deterrents, which work by scaring or repelling them away from your trees. There are various types of bird deterrents available on the market:

– Reflective tapes or discs: These shiny objects create a visual disturbance when they move in the wind, scaring off birds.

– Wind chimes or noise-making devices: Some birds, like pigeons, are easily scared off by sudden or loud noises.

– Predator decoys: Fake owls or hawks placed near the tree will give the impression of a predator nearby, deterring smaller birds from approaching.

Combine multiple deterrents for maximum effectiveness and be prepared to rotate or replace them if they seem less effective over time, as birds may get used to them.

3. Maintain a healthy environment

Maintaining a healthy environment around your cherry trees can help prevent birds from being attracted to the area. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

– Prune dead or damaged branches as these may attract insects, which in turn attract birds.

– Keep the grass mowed around the base of the tree to discourage rodents from making their homes and potentially attracting predatory birds.

– Limit sources of standing water, as this can draw various types of wildlife, including insects and birds.

– Plant other bird-attractive plants further away from your cherry trees. By offering alternative food sources, you can keep birds occupied and farther from your precious fruits.

Protecting your cherry trees from birds can be a challenging task, but with proper planning and persistence, it’s possible to enjoy a plentiful harvest without losing it all to our feathered friends. Implementing these strategies will help ensure that both you and the local wildlife can coexist peacefully.
