3 Ways to Play With Your Parakeet

Parakeets are small, playful, and highly social birds that make great pets. They crave interaction, and one of the best ways to bond with your parakeet is through play. Engaging in entertaining activities with your parakeet not only helps strengthen your bond but also provides essential physical and mental stimulation for these intelligent creatures. Here are three ways to play with your parakeet that will keep them happy and healthy.

1. Interactive Toys

A well-stocked cage with a variety of engaging toys is essential for keeping your parakeet entertained. However, there’s nothing better than being their favorite playmate! Offer toys that you can interact with together, such as small balls, mirrors, and bells. Teach them to fetch by tossing a lightweight ball outside their cage and waiting for them to retrieve it. Use a bell or a small mirror and move it around the cage or outside of it so your parakeet will follow it with their eyes or try to play with it using their beak.

2. Target Training

Parakeets are quick learners. By introducing target training into their daily routine, you’ll not only teach them new skills but also provide much-needed mental stimulation. Use a target stick (a chopstick works great) and a clicker to train your bird to follow the target stick around the cage or on a secure play area outside the cage. Every time they follow the target stick correctly, click and reward them with a treat like millet spray. Once they master following the stick in close proximity, you can gradually increase the distance between them and the target to add more challenge.

3. Play-Perch Time

Socializing is crucial for parakeets’ well-being. Position an activity-based play-perch nearby where you spend most of your time at home so you can easily interact while ensuring their safety. Encourage your parakeet to climb, hang or swing on this play-perch. Play gentle games, like peekaboo or hide-and-seek with your fingers. Mimic their sounds and whistle back and forth to engage in a fun “conversation.”

Remember, patience is key to bonding with your parakeet. Spend time with them every day, be consistent with your play sessions, and make sure that their cage is equipped with toys and the opportunity for self-entertainment when you are not available. Your parakeet may soon look forward to their playtime even more than you do!
