Introduction

Multiplying fractions and whole numbers may seem intimidating at first, but with a little practice and the right techniques, it can be straightforward and simple. In this article, we will explore three methods to multiply fractions with whole numbers quickly and accurately.

Method 1: Converting the Whole Number to a Fraction

Step 1: Convert the whole number into a fraction by placing it over 1.

Example: Multiply 2/3 by 4 (whole number):

– Convert the whole number 4 to a fraction format by placing it over 1. Now, we get 4/1.

Step 2: Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together.

Example:

– Numerator = 2 x 4 = 8

– Denominator = 3 x 1 = 3

The result is 8/3.

Method 2: Using Cross-Multiplication

Step 1: Write the whole number as a fraction.

Example: Multiply 2/3 by 4 (whole number):

– Convert the whole number into a fraction format by placing it over itself. Now, we get (4×1)/4.

Step 2: Cross-multiply the numbers in the fractions.

Example:

– Numerator = (2 x (4×1)) = 8

– Denominator = (3 x 4) =12

Step 3: Simplify the fraction if necessary.

The result is again, simplified as, 8/3.

Method 3: Multiplying With Mixed Numbers

Step 1: Convert both fractions to mixed numbers if needed.

Example: Multiply (2 and _1/5_) with (3 and _1/7_)

Step 2: In this method, first, convert both mixed numbers into improper fractions.

(11/5) and (22/7)

Step 3: Now, multiply both the improper fractions as in Method 1.

Example: Multiply 11/5 by 22/7.

– Numerator = 11 x 22 = 242

– Denominator = 5 x 7 = 35

Step 4: Simplify the result and convert it back into a mixed number if required.

The result is simplified as (6 and _32/35_).

Conclusion

Now, you have learned three different methods for multiplying fractions with whole numbers. Understanding these techniques will make working with fractions much more manageable. With practice, you’ll become more comfortable and confident in handling such problems in your day-to-day calculations or mathematical tasks. Keep practicing, and soon, fractions won’t appear challenging anymore!
