3 Ways to Make Yourself Cough

Coughing is a natural mechanism that helps our body expel irritants, mucus, and harmful substances from our throat and lungs. However, there are instances where inducing a cough intentionally can be beneficial to clear out obstructive mucus or inhaled foreign particles. Here are three ways you can make yourself cough:

1. Inhale Steam with Fragrant Herbs or Essential Oils

For this method, all you need is a bowl of hot water and an essential oil or some fragrant herbs like eucalyptus or peppermint. Pour boiling water into a large bowl. Add a few drops of essential oil or some herbs. Carefully lean over the bowl with a towel draped over your head, forming a tent to trap the steam. Inhale the steam slowly for about five to ten minutes. The menthol in these fragrant substances will stimulate your respiratory system and trigger coughing reflexes, allowing you to cough more naturally and comfortably.

2. Use the “Huff” Technique

The “huff” technique is helpful for those with conditions causing excessive mucus production, such as chronic bronchitis or cystic fibrosis. This technique helps move mucus from deep within your lungs without causing irritation like hard coughing does.

To do the huff technique:

– Start by sitting upright.

– Take a deep breath in through your nose.

– Close your mouth and pinch your nostrils shut.

– Using your diaphragm, force the air out in short bursts while making an almost silent “huff” sound. Think of it like fogging up a mirror.

– Repeat three sets of three huffs each, followed by controlled breathing through the nose.

3. Gargle with Salt Water

Gargling with warm salt water can help induce a cough by clearing mucus and irritating trapped particles. The saline mix assists in softening the mucus, making it easier to come up with coughing.

To gargle with salt water:

– Mix one teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water.

– Take a mouthful of the warm salt water, lean your head back, and gargle for 10 to 15 seconds without swallowing.

– Spit out the salt water and repeat the process for about 5 minutes, or until you feel the need to cough.

It is essential to keep in mind that these methods should not be used excessively or without reason. If you experience persistent coughing or difficulty breathing, it’s crucial to consult with a medical professional regarding your symptoms.
