3 Ways to Make Black Hair Curly

Introduction

Black hair is known for its versatility and ability to hold different shapes and styles. One popular style among those with black hair is the addition of curls, which can provide a lively and bouncy appearance. In this article, we will explore three different methods you can use to make black hair curly, including using heat styling tools, adopting a natural approach with no-heat techniques, and chemically treating your hair.

1. Heat Styling Techniques

One of the most common ways to achieve curls is through the use of heat styling tools such as curling irons, wands, or flat irons. To get started, follow these steps:

a) Begin by washing and conditioning your hair.

b) After drying your hair with a towel, apply a heat protectant spray to prevent damage from the styling tools.

c) Section your hair into smaller parts for easier management.

d) Using your preferred styling tool, start curling your hair from the roots to the ends. Hold for a few seconds before releasing.

e) Once all sections are curled, separate them gently with your fingers or a wide-toothed comb.

f) Finally, set your curls with a light hairspray for added hold.

2. No-Heat Techniques

For those who want to avoid potential heat damage, several no-heat methods can be used to create beautiful curls. These techniques work best on damp or slightly wet hair:

a) Bantu Knots – Section and twist each part of your hair before wrapping it into small buns (knots) around the head. Leave these in place overnight or until completely dry; then carefully unravel them.

b) Flexi Rods – Wrap sections of your hair around the rods and allow them to sit for several hours or overnight. Remove the rods and gently finger-comb the curls into place.

c) Braids or Twists – Plait your hair into several braids or twists and let them dry overnight or for a few hours. Undo the braids/twists to release soft waves or curls.

3. Chemical Treatments

Another option for achieving curls is through a professional chemical treatment such as a perm or texturizer. Consult with a licensed stylist to determine which option is best for your hair type and desired curl pattern.

a) Perms – This process usually involves the application of chemicals to soften the hair structure, followed by wrapping the hair around rods, then neutralizing it to set the curl pattern. The results can last anywhere from two to six months, depending on your hair growth rate.

b) Texturizers – These are milder than perms and designed to loosen the natural curl pattern of black hair, resulting in a more manageable and defined wave or curl. This treatment lasts until your new hair growth comes in.

Conclusion

Curly hairstyles add versatility, volume, and a touch of elegance to black hair. Using heat styling tools, no-heat techniques, or chemical treatments are all effective methods to achieve beautiful curls or waves. It’s essential to consider your hair type and lifestyle when choosing the best method for you. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different techniques until you find the perfect curls for your crowning glory!
