3 Ways to Make a DIY Humidor

A humidor is an essential accessory for cigar enthusiasts, as it helps maintain the freshness and flavor of cigars by preserving their optimum humidity. Although you can buy a humidor in different styles and sizes, creating a DIY humidor not only saves money but also allows you to customize it according to your preferences. In this article, we will explore three ways to make your very own DIY humidor.

1. Convert an Old Cooler

One of the easiest and most affordable ways to create a DIY humidor is by repurposing an old cooler. Here’s how:

– Materials needed: Old cooler, hygrometer, humidification device or Boveda packs, cedar or Spanish cedar tray (optional)

– Start by cleaning the cooler thoroughly with warm soapy water and letting it air dry completely.

– Next, place a hygrometer inside the cooler to monitor humidity levels. Hygrometers are essential for ensuring that your cigars are stored at an ideal humidity level (65-75% RH is preferable for cigars).

– Now, add your preferred choice of humidification device or Boveda packs that maintain proper humidity levels inside the cooler.

– Optionally, you can add a cedar or Spanish cedar tray to separate your cigars and enhance the aroma inside your humidor.

2. Repurpose a Tupperware Container

Another simple way to create a DIY humidor is by using a Tupperware container or any other plastic container with an air-tight seal. Here’s how:

– Materials needed: Plastic container with a sealable lid, hygrometer, humidification device or Boveda packs, cedar sheets (optional)

– Clean the container thoroughly with warm soapy water and let it air dry.

– Just like in the previous method, place the hygrometer inside the container to monitor humidity levels.

– Add your choice of humidification device or Boveda packs into the container.

– If desired, line the bottom of the container with cedar sheets to enhance the aroma of your cigars. Cedar sheets also help maintain humidity levels inside the container.

3. Refurbish an Old Wooden Box

If you have an old wooden box lying around, give it new life by converting it into a DIY humidor. Here’s how:

– Materials needed: Wooden box, hygrometer, humidification device or Boveda packs, cedar or Spanish cedar lining, wood glue or nails

– Begin by removing any hardware from the box and sanding it down to remove any old paint or varnish.

– Measure and cut the cedar lining to fit the interior dimensions of the box. Attach the cedar lining to the interior using either wood glue or nails.

– Install a hygrometer on the inside of the box lid to keep track of humidity levels.

– Add your preferred choice of humidification device or Boveda packs into the box.

– Once all your components are in place, close the lid and allow your new humidor to sit for at least 24 hours before placing your cigars inside it. This allows time for the humidity levels to stabilize properly.

In conclusion, these three methods offer practical and creative ways to make a DIY humidor for storing your precious cigars. With some basic materials and tools, you can create a customized humidor that caters to your needs while saving money on store-bought options.
