3 Ways to Light a Pilot Light

When your water heater or furnace goes out, relighting the pilot light is often the first step in getting things back up and running. The pilot light is essential for maintaining a consistent flame that ignites the gas in these appliances. Here are three methods for lighting a pilot light safely and effectively.

1. Manual Ignition

Before you start, make sure you turn off the gas supply valve and wait for several minutes to clear out any lingering gas. Then, follow these steps:

a) Locate the pilot light valve, which is usually near the bottom of your appliance.

b) Turn the control knob to “Pilot” or a similar setting.

c) Push down on the control knob and hold it in place, allowing gas to flow.

d) Use a long match or lighter to ignite the pilot light while still holding down the knob.

e) Keep holding the control knob down for about 30 seconds to ensure the flame stays lit.

f) Release the control knob and turn it back to its normal operating position.

2. Piezo Ignition

Piezo ignition systems use an electric spark to ignite the pilot light. Here’s how to use them:

a) Turn off the gas supply valve and wait for several minutes before proceeding.

b) Locate the piezo igniter button, usually denoted by a red casing or label near the main control dial of your appliance.

c) Switch on the appliance’s main gas control valve.

d) Press and hold the piezo igniter button until you hear a clicking sound that indicates sparking has occurred. This may take several tries.

e) Once you see a flame at the pilot light opening, continue holding down the button for 30 seconds before releasing it.

3. Electronic Ignition

Some modern appliances utilize electronic ignition systems that do not require manual intervention. They have built-in safety features and automatically restart if necessary.

a) Activate the unit by turning on the power switch or adjusting the thermostat to a higher temperature.

b) Listen for the ignition system to start clicking as it attempts to light the pilot light.

c) Once the pilot flame stabilizes, the main burners should automatically come on.

Following these methods can help you light your pilot light easily and safely. Always refer to your appliance’s user manual for specific instructions and important safety precautions. If you are unable to light your pilot light or if it frequently goes out, be sure to contact a professional technician for assistance.
