3 Ways to Hem Curtains

Hemming curtains is an essential skill for any homeowner who wants to achieve a polished look for their windows. Whether you’ve got a new set of curtains or want to update the look of an existing pair, hemming is the way to go. In this article, we’ll explore three methods for hemming curtains: hand sewing, using a sewing machine, and utilizing the no-sew method with hemming tape.

1. Hand Sewing

When you don’t have access to a sewing machine or prefer a more hands-on approach, hand sewing is a great option. To hand sew your curtains, follow these steps:

1. Measure and mark – Determine your desired curtain length and add an extra inch for the hem allowance. Measure up from the bottom edge, making even markings along the curtain.

2. Press the fabric – Fold the bottom edge up by half an inch and iron it in place. Then fold again by another half-inch so that the raw edge is tucked inside.

3. Sew in place – Use a needle and thread to sew small stitches along the folded edge, being careful not to let the stitches show on the front side of the curtain.

2. Sewing Machine

For a quicker and more professional-looking finish, using a sewing machine can be advantageous. Follow these steps for machine-hemming your curtains:

1. Measure and cut – Measure your desired curtain length, including an extra inch for seam allowance. Make even markings along the fabric and cut off any excess material.

2. Press the fabric – Fold up the bottom edge by half an inch and iron it in place. Fold it again by another half-inch and press once more.

3. Machine sew – Using a straight stitch setting on your sewing machine, sew close to the folded edge all around the curtain hem to secure it in place.

3. No-Sew Hemming Tape Method

For those who would rather avoid sewing altogether, hemming tape is a convenient alternative. This method requires an iron and some fusible hemming tape. Follow these steps:

1. Measure and trim – Determine the desired length of your curtains and add an extra inch for the hem allowance. Mark evenly along the fabric and cut off any excess material.

2. Apply hemming tape – Fold up the bottom edge by one inch, then insert a strip of hemming tape between the folded layers. Make sure it lays flat and even along the entire length of the curtain.

3. Iron in place – Press the iron on to the folded area for around 10 seconds, or according to the hemming tape instructions, until it adheres. This will create a bond between the layers and secure the hem.

No matter which method you choose, taking your time and carefully measuring will ensure a professional-looking finish on your curtains. Happy hemming!
