3 Ways to Hang a Picture

A picture can speak a thousand words, but displaying your treasured masterpieces in the most secure and visually appealing way is an art in itself. There are numerous methods to hang a picture, each tailored for specific frames and wall types. In this article, we will discuss three distinct ways to hang a picture so that you can find the best method for showcasing your beautiful artwork.
1. Using Picture Hooks
Picture hooks are simple, traditional methods for hanging framed pictures on walls. They come in various sizes to accommodate different frame weights and sizes.
Step-by-Step Guide:
a. Choose the appropriate size and design of picture hook based on the size and weight of the picture frame you wish to hang.
b. With a pencil, mark the spot on the wall where you want the picture to be hanged.
c. Hold the picture hook against the wall at the marked spot with its hook extending upward.
d. Use a hammer to gently tap the nails into place without completely driving them in yet.
e. Hang your picture on the hook and adjust it slightly until you achieve the desired position.
f. Once satisfied with your placement, firmly hammer in the nails so that they are flush with the wall.
2. Using Command Strips
For those who prefer a less invasive method or reside in rented spaces, Command strips offer an excellent solution for hanging pictures without causing any damage to your walls.
Step-by-Step Guide:
a. Clean your wall surface with isopropyl rubbing alcohol and let it dry to ensure proper adhesion of command strips.
b. Choose suitable Command strips according to the weight limit stated on their packaging relating to your frame’s weight.
c. Apply one side of each strip to four corners at the back of your picture frame, pressing firmly for approximately 30 seconds.
d. Remove the liner from the adhesive side of each strip now attached to your picture frame.
e. Align your picture frame on the wall and press firmly for 30 seconds.
f. Detach your frame from the wall by grabbing it from the bottom corners and lifting in an upward motion, leaving the adhesive strips on the wall.
g. Press down firmly on the Command strips for at least 30 seconds to establish a strong hold on the wall.
h. Reattach your picture frame to the Command strips by aligning them correctly and pressing firmly.
3. Using French Cleats
French cleats are more secure methods for hanging heavy or larger picture frames, providing a sturdy means of support.
Step-by-Step Guide:
a. Purchase or craft a French cleat system consisting of two wooden boards, one with a 45-degree angled edge facing upward (attached to the back of the frame) and another with a 45-degree angled edge facing downward (attached to the wall).
b. Secure one side of the French cleat to your picture frame’s backside using screws, with its 45-degree angle edge facing upward.
c. Hold your artwork against the location you would like it to be displayed, leveling it accurately.
d. Make sure someone is there to provide assistance holding it while you mark spots on the wall corresponding to screw holes for the other half of French cleat, aligned with that on your picture frame.
e. Install wall anchors if needed, depending on location and weight of picture frame.
f. Attach half of the French cleat system to your wall with its 45-degree angle edge facing downward.
g. Gently place your framed artwork onto the cleat attached on your wall until it is snug against it for a secured hang.
