3 Ways to Get Rid of Psoriasis on Your Nails

Introduction

Psoriasis is a common skin condition caused by an overactive immune system. It can affect various parts of the body, including the nails. Nail psoriasis can lead to nail thickening, discoloration, pitting, and even separation from the nail bed. Fortunately, there are several ways to manage and treat nail psoriasis. In this article, we’ll explore 3 effective ways to get rid of psoriasis on your nails.

1. Topical Treatments

Topical treatments are applied directly to the affected nails and often yield positive results for individuals with mild to moderate nail psoriasis. Commonly prescribed topical treatments include corticosteroid creams, vitamin D analog creams, and coal tar ointments.

To use these products, simply apply a small amount of the cream or ointment onto the affected areas following the directions provided by your healthcare professional or the instructions on the packaging.

2. Injections

If topical treatments prove insufficient or fail to alleviate symptoms significantly, your doctor may recommend injections. Steroid injections are administered directly into the nail bed and matrix – these are areas where new nail development occurs.

Steroid injections can be highly effective in treating nail psoriasis; however, they may cause some discomfort during administration. To minimize pain and ensure proper distribution of medication throughout the nail matrix, it’s essential to have these injections performed by a qualified healthcare professional.

3. Oral Medications and Biologic Treatments

Patients with severe or unresponsive cases of nail psoriasis may require oral medications or biologic treatments. These medications work by targeting specific components of the immune system responsible for inflammation and psoriatic symptoms.

Systemic therapies such as methotrexate, cyclosporine or apremilast can be used for treating nail psoriasis. Biologic medications like adalimumab (Humira), etanercept (Enbrel), and ustekinumab (Stelara) are also useful in treating this condition.

It’s important to note that these treatments come with potential side effects and risks that should be discussed with your healthcare professional before starting a specific therapy.

Conclusion

Treating nail psoriasis involves a combination of patience and persistence. While these three methods can be successful in managing the condition, remember that each individual’s experience may vary. It is essential to work closely with your healthcare provider to find the most effective treatment for your unique circumstances. With the right approach, you can successfully get rid of psoriasis on your nails and enjoy healthy, clear nails once again.
