3 Ways to Get Rid of a Squirrel in Your House

Introduction:

Squirrels are adorable little creatures often found scampering in our gardens or nearby trees. However, when they find their way into our homes, they can become a nuisance, causing damage to property and posing potential health risks. Whether they have entered your home through the attic or have found a gap in your wall, here are three effective ways to get rid of squirrels from your house safely.

1. Trap and Relocate

One of the most effective ways to get rid of squirrels is by trapping them and then relocating them away from your property. There are different types of traps available in the market like live cage traps, spring-loaded traps, and tube traps among others. Live cage traps are considered the most humane; just ensure that they are large enough for the squirrel to fit comfortably inside. Bait the trap using peanut butter or nuts as squirrels love these treats. Check the trap regularly, and once you have captured the critter, release it at least five miles away from your home to prevent it from returning.

2. Use Repellents

There are various repellents available in stores that help deter squirrels from entering your home or encourage them to leave if they’ve already made themselves comfortable. Some commonly used repellents include:

– Natural repellents: These can include predator urine (such as fox urine), peppermint oil, or naphthalene (mothballs). However, some natural repellents might not be strong enough to discourage the squirrel fully.

– Ultrasonic repellent devices: These emit a sound that is uncomfortable for animals but doesn’t harm them or bother humans. Install these in areas where squirrels tend to frequent; however, their effectiveness might vary.

Keep in mind that repellents aren’t always foolproof and might require additional methods for full effectiveness.

3. Seal Entry Points

The best long-term solution to keep squirrels out of your house is by ensuring the entry points are sealed. Inspect your home’s exterior for any holes, gaps, or crevices where squirrels could enter and use sturdy materials such as metal flashing or wire mesh to seal them.

It’s also worthwhile to trim tree branches that are close to your roof, as squirrels often use these as a bridge to access your house. Be on the lookout for water damage and be sure to repair any leaks since dampened wood can attract squirrels and make gnawing through much easier.

Conclusion:

Squirrels may be cute, but they can cause chaos if they find their way into your home. Use these three methods – trapping and relocating, using repellents, and sealing entry points – to humanely get rid of squirrels in your house while preventing future invasions. If all else fails or there is a significant infestation, consider calling a professional wildlife removal service for assistance.
