3 Ways to Get Jalapeno Off Your Hands

Chopping up jalapenos for a spicy dish can be an exciting culinary adventure, but accidentally touching your eyes or other sensitive areas with jalapeno-covered hands can be a painful experience. Don’t worry, though – there are simple and effective ways to clean your hands and banish the burn. Here are three methods to help you get jalapeno off your hands quickly and safely.

1. Dish Soap and Cold Water

One of the easiest ways to remove jalapeno from your hands is by using dish soap and cold water. Dish soap contains surfactants that can help break down the oils found in jalapenos, making it easier for the capsaicin (the compound responsible for the heat) to wash away.

To use this method, simply follow these steps:

– Rinse your hands under cold running water.

– Squirt a generous amount of dish soap onto your palms.

– Vigorously rub your hands together under the water, making sure to get between your fingers and around your nails.

– Continue scrubbing for at least 30 seconds before rinsing away all of the soap with cold water.

2. Rubbing Alcohol or Hand Sanitizer

Alcohol-based products such as rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer are also effective at breaking down oils and removing capsaicin from your skin.

Follow these steps for this method:

– Apply a generous amount of rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer to a clean cloth or paper towel.

– Rub the cloth or paper towel over the affected area on your hands, making sure to cover every spot touched by jalapeno.

– Once you’ve thoroughly covered your hands with the alcohol-based product, rinse them under cold water to wash away any remaining residue.

3. Dairy Products

Dairy products like milk, yogurt, or sour cream contain casein, a protein that helps counteract capsaicin and sooth the burning sensation. For this method:

– Pour a small amount of milk, yogurt, or sour cream onto your hands.

– Gently rub the dairy product into your skin, focusing on the areas with jalapeno residue.

– Once you’ve covered your hands in the dairy product, wash them with dish soap and cold water.

Final Thoughts

The next time you’re handling jalapenos or other spicy peppers, be prepared for quick relief by having these essential items handy. Whenever possible, it’s best to wear gloves when working with hot peppers to avoid accidental burns. So next time you feel the heat, use one of these three methods to get jalapeno off your hands and keep burning sensations at bay.
