3 Ways to Freeze Cherry Tomatoes

Introduction:

Cherry tomatoes are a delicious and versatile ingredient that can be used in a variety of dishes, from salads to sauces. However, like all fresh produce, they have a limited shelf life. Fortunately, freezing cherry tomatoes is an excellent way to preserve their flavor and extend their usefulness in your kitchen. In this article, we will discuss three different methods for freezing cherry tomatoes: whole, halved, and as a purée.

1. Freezing Whole Cherry Tomatoes:

One of the easiest ways to store cherry tomatoes is to freeze them whole. This is ideal if you plan on using them later in dishes where they will be cooked or if you enjoy snacking on frozen tomatoes during hot summer days.

Here’s how:

– Wash the cherry tomatoes thoroughly and remove any leaves or stems.

– Allow them to air dry completely.

– Spread the whole cherry tomatoes out on a baking sheet or tray lined with parchment paper.

– Place the tray in the freezer for an hour or until the tomatoes are frozen solid.

– Transfer the frozen cherry tomatoes into an airtight container or freezer-safe plastic bag.

– Seal and store in the freezer for up to six months.

2. Freezing Halved Cherry Tomatoes:

If you prefer your cherry tomatoes sliced, you can freeze them halved as well. This method works well for recipes requiring sautéed or roasted tomatoes.

Here’s how:

– Wash the cherry tomatoes thoroughly and remove any leaves or stems.

– Cut each tomato in half.

– Arrange the halved cherry tomatoes cut-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

– Place the tray in the freezer for about an hour until they are frozen solid.

– Transfer the frozen halves into an airtight container or freezer-safe plastic bag.

– Seal and store in the freezer for up to six months.

3. Freezing Cherry Tomato Purée:

For dishes that require a smoother texture, you can purée your cherry tomatoes before freezing. Cherry tomato purée is perfect for sauces, soups, and stews.

Here’s how:

– Wash the cherry tomatoes thoroughly and remove any leaves or stems.

– Simmer the tomatoes in a saucepan over medium heat for about 10-15 minutes until they become soft and start to break down.

– Allow the tomatoes to cool slightly before transferring them to a blender or food processor and puréeing them to your desired consistency.

– Pour the tomato purée into ice cube trays and place them in the freezer until the purée is frozen solid.

– Pop out the frozen purée cubes and transfer them into an airtight container or freezer-safe plastic bag.

– Seal and store in the freezer for up to six months.

Conclusion:

Freezing cherry tomatoes is an effective way to preserve their flavor and nutritional value during periods when they are not readily available or when you have an abundant harvest from your garden. By employing these three freezing methods, you can make sure that you have versatile, flavorful tomatoes on hand year-round for all of your favorite recipes.
