Tamarillos, also known as tree tomatoes, are an exotic and nutritious fruit native to South America. With their unique flavor profile ranging from sweet to tangy, tamarillos can be enjoyed in various ways. Here are three delectable methods to savor this tropical treat.

1. Raw Tamarillos with a Twist

Eating tamarillos raw allows you to experience the fruit’s natural flavors and vibrant texture. To prepare a simple yet scrumptious snack:

– Thoroughly wash the tamarillo and pat dry.

– Slice the fruit in half, lengthwise.

– Using a spoon, scoop out the juicy flesh, avoiding the thin layer of slightly bitter skin.

– If you prefer to add some sweetness, sprinkle a pinch of sugar or drizzle honey over the fruit’s flesh.

For a more exciting twist, top the tamarillo flesh with plain yogurt or whipped cream and granola for added crunch. This zesty combination makes for an indulgent yet healthy dessert or breakfast option.

2. Tamarillo Salsa

A tangy and refreshing tamarillo salsa is a surefire way to elevate your appetizers and main dishes. To make this unique salsa:

– Peel and dice 4 ripe tamarillos.

– In a bowl, combine the diced tamarillos with 1 finely chopped red onion, 1 minced garlic clove, 1 diced jalapeño pepper (seeds removed), juice of 1 lime, salt, and pepper.

– Stir in ½ cup of chopped cilantro or parsley.

– Chill for at least an hour before serving to let flavors meld.

Tamarillo salsa pairs wonderfully with tortilla chips, grilled seafood, tacos, or roast chicken.

3. Tamarillo Chutney

Creating a savory-spicy tamarillo chutney can accentuate your dishes with a burst of rich flavor. Here’s a basic recipe:

– Peel and chop 1 pound of tamarillos.

– In a saucepan, heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Add 1 large chopped onion, 2 minced garlic cloves, and 1 teaspoon grated ginger, cooking until softened.

– Stir in the chopped tamarillos, 1 cup brown sugar, ¾ cup apple cider vinegar, ½ cup raisins, and 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes.

– Simmer for about 45 minutes until the mixture resembles a thick, chunky jam.

This versatile tamarillo chutney can be served with crackers and cheese, smeared on sandwiches or flatbreads, or as a side to curries and roast meats.

Whether consumed raw or incorporated into tasty recipes, tamarillos offer endless culinary possibilities. Experiment with these three methods to savor the tangy taste of this tropical treat.
