3 Ways to Eat Raw Turmeric

Introduction

Turmeric, a golden spice native to Southeast Asia, has been valued for its medicinal properties and vibrant hue since ancient times. Curcumin, the main active compound in turmeric, is responsible for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Incorporating raw turmeric into your diet allows you to reap these benefits. Here are three ways to eat raw turmeric, elevating both your meals and your health.

1. Blend it into Smoothies or Juices

Adding fresh turmeric root to your smoothies or juices is a fantastic way to enjoy its benefits without altering the overall taste of your drink too much. Start by peeling and chopping a 1-inch piece of raw turmeric root. Then, toss it into your blender with other fruits, vegetables, nuts, or seeds you typically use in your smoothie or juice recipes. The warmth of the spice pairs well with tropical fruits like pineapple and mango, while also complementing earthy flavors like spinach and kale.

2. Grate it into Salads and Slaws

Brighten up your salads and slaws by grating or thinly slicing raw turmeric root into them. A simple trick: use a Microplane or fine grater to grate about 1/4 teaspoon of fresh turmeric directly over your bowl of leafy greens, coleslaw mix, or grain-based salads like quinoa. The earthy flavor of turmeric pairs nicely with zesty citrus-based dressings which can help balance the taste while also enhancing nutrient absorption due to vitamin C content.

3. Create a Turmeric-Infused Paste

Harness the power of raw turmeric by creating a versatile paste that you can add to various dishes throughout the week. Make sure you wear gloves when handling turmeric as it could stain hands for some time. Combine 1 cup peeled and chopped turmeric root, 1/2 cup of water, and a pinch of black pepper in a blender or food processor. Blend until you achieve a paste-like consistency, adding more water if needed. Store the paste in an airtight container in your refrigerator for up to two weeks. You can use this paste as a base for salad dressings, stir it into soups and stews, or spread it on toast with avocado or hummus for an antioxidant boost.

Conclusion

Eating raw turmeric is an easy and effective way to integrate the powerful health benefits of this superfood into your daily routine. By blending it into smoothies or juices, grating it over salads and slaws, or creating a versatile turmeric-infused paste, you’re unlocking the true potential of this ancient spice. Whichever method you choose, make sure to add black pepper whenever consuming turmeric – it’s known to increase curcumin absorption making turmeric even more beneficial to your overall well-being.
