3 Ways to Eat Jackfruit

Famous for being the largest tree-bound fruit in the world, jackfruit can weigh anywhere from 10 to 100 pounds. It is a tropical fruit native to South Asia, and has grown in popularity across the globe for its unique taste and versatility. Boasting a sweet, almost tropical flavor, jackfruit can be enjoyed in myriad ways — both as a ripe fruit and as an unripe substitute for meat in savory dishes. Let’s explore three spectacular ways to devour this delectable treat.

1. Jackfruit Curry – A rich and satisfying dish

For a filling and scrumptious meal, prepare a homemade jackfruit curry. Start by frying onion, garlic, ginger, and your choice of spices (such as turmeric, garam masala, red chili powder, and cumin) in oil. Add chopped tomatoes and continue cooking until they’ve melded into a base for the sauce. Next, incorporate your chunks of young, unripe jackfruit, which should be boiled or canned beforehand. Allow the curry to simmer on low heat until the flavors meld together and the jackfruit is tender. Serve over rice or alongside naan for a mouthwatering meal bursting with flavor.

2. Jackfruit Tacos – Vegan treats with an exotic twist

Jackfruit is increasingly popular among vegetarians and vegans because it provides an excellent meat alternative due to its similarity in texture when cooked. To embark on your vegan-friendly taco adventure, opt for young jackfruit that is either canned or boiled. Drain any excess water and season it with a blend of Mexican spices, including smoked paprika, cumin, chili powder, garlic powder, and onion powder. After seasoning the mixture, sauté it over medium heat until everything is heated through. Fill your favorite tortillas with the tantalizing jackfruit “meat”, then sprinkle fresh toppings such as avocado, cilantro, diced onion and tomatoes, and a squeeze of lime juice. Bon appétit!

3. Ripe Jackfruit – The classic way to savor the sweet taste

If you’ve had your fill of savory jackfruit dishes, why not enjoy the fruit in its simplest form? When a jackfruit is ripe, its flesh will boast a delectable sweetness with hints of mango, pineapple, and banana. First, make sure your fruit is ripe by looking for deep golden hues on its exterior and pressing it gently to feel whether it has become soft. Cut open the jackfruit and separate the individual pods from the fibrous core, removing any seeds in the process. After cleaning the pods, try popping them right into your mouth or adding them to a luscious fruit salad.

In conclusion, jackfruit offers an extraordinary culinary journey that allows you to experience both its savory and sweet flavors. From rich curries to tangy tacos, there are endless possibilities for utilizing this versatile fruit in your culinary adventures.
