3 Ways to Do Taxidermy

Introduction:

Taxidermy, the art of preserving and displaying animal specimens, has been popular for centuries. With advancements in technology and techniques, this age-old practice has become more accessible for enthusiasts who want to learn the craft. In this article, we will discuss three different ways of doing taxidermy for those interested in beginning their taxidermy journey.

1. Traditional Skin Mount Taxidermy:

Traditional skin mount taxidermy is the most common method used to preserve and display animals. This process involves carefully skinning the animal, removing excess fat and flesh before treating the skin with chemicals to prevent decay. The treated skin is then placed on a custom-made mannequin or “form” that matches the animal’s anatomy. Additional details such as glass eyes, artificial teeth, and other appendages are added before sewing the skin back together over the form.

2. Freeze-Drying Taxidermy:

Freeze-drying taxidermy is relatively new compared to traditional methods and offers multiple benefits such as less odor, less shrinkage of skin, and better preservation of color and texture on small mammals and birds. Freeze-drying involves placing the prepared specimen in a vacuum chamber where it undergoes rapid freezing followed by an intense drying process that sublimates moisture from the body through vaporization. This results in a lightweight but lifelike replica that can be easily displayed.

3. Rogue Taxidermy:

Rogue taxidermy refers to an emerging art form that combines both traditional taxidermy techniques and creative artistic expression. It focuses on creating surreal and fantastical creatures by combining body parts from different animals. For example, a rogue taxidermist might create a “griffin” by attaching the head of an eagle to the body of a lion or create a mythical creature entirely from their imagination. Due to its unconventional nature, rogue taxidermy has gained popularity as a unique form of self-expression among artists and taxidermy enthusiasts.

Conclusion:

Taxidermy is an interesting and intricate art form that promises a rewarding experience for those fascinated by the natural world. Whether you choose the traditional skin mounts, freeze-drying, or explore the limitless possibilities of rogue taxidermy, always remember to acquire specimens ethically, and learn proper techniques to ensure a respectful tribute to the animal’s life. By understanding these three ways of doing taxidermy, beginners can choose the right style that best suits their interests and maximize their potential in this fascinating field.
