3 Ways to Disarm a Criminal with a Handgun

When faced with the dangerous situation of being held at gunpoint by a criminal, it’s crucial to understand how to handle this stressful situation effectively. Although the optimal course of action is always to comply with the criminal’s demands, there may be times when you are left with no choice but to defend yourself. In this article, we will discuss three techniques on how to disarm a criminal holding a handgun, potentially saving your life or others around you.

1. Verbal De-Escalation

Before attempting any physical action, it’s essential to assess the situation and attempt verbal de-escalation. This method involves communicating calmly with the armed individual to build rapport and create a sense of understanding between you and them. By maintaining eye contact, speaking softly, and showing empathy, you may create an opportunity for the attacker to lower their guard, which could allow you to disarm them more easily.

2. The Surprise Attack

If verbal de-escalation proves unsuccessful or it becomes clear that physical intervention is necessary, one approach involves applying a surprise attack. Timing is critical in this tactic. As the attacker focuses on something or becomes momentarily distracted, quickly close the distance between you and the assailant while shouting loudly to disorient them further. While doing so, intercept the weapon-bearing hand with one hand while simultaneously striking their head or throat with your other hand. By targeting sensitive areas such as the eyes or throat, you can temporarily incapacitate your attacker and create an opening for gun retrieval.

3. The Two-On-One Technique

The Two-On-One technique requires grabbing hold of your attacker’s weapon-bearing hand with both of your hands – one grasping their wrist and the other their hand or fingers holding the pistol. Utilize your body weight by pulling downwards in an attempt to disarm them while restricting their movement. To minimize risk in this technique, be cautious not to point the gun toward yourself or others nearby. It is also crucial to maintain a firm grip on your attacker’s weapon hand to gain control.

It’s important to remember that these techniques should only be used as a last resort when all other options fail, and you believe your life is in imminent danger. Disarming a criminal with a handgun can be dangerous and potentially escalate the situation. If you are ever faced with such a situation, contact law enforcement and seek professional guidance for proper self-defense training.
