3 Ways to Determine Shoe Width

Introduction:

Finding the perfect pair of shoes is a challenge for many people, especially when it comes to determining the right width. Shoes that are too narrow can cause discomfort and even lead to foot problems, while shoes that are too wide can hinder your ability to walk properly and provide insufficient support. To help you find the ideal shoe width, we’ve compiled three effective and simple methods. By using these tips, you’ll have a much better chance of shopping for comfortable and well-fitting shoes.

1. Measure Your Feet at Home:

The first step to determining your shoe width is to measure your feet accurately. To do this, follow these steps:

a) Place a blank piece of paper on a hard, flat surface.

b) Wearing socks of your typical thickness, stand on the paper with one foot, distributing your weight evenly.

c) Using a pen or pencil, trace around the perimeter of your foot, keeping the pen as vertical as possible.

d) With a ruler or tape measure, determine the widest part of your foot (usually at the ball of the foot), and note down the measurement in inches or centimeters.

e) Compare your measurement to standard shoe width charts available online or in stores. Shoe widths are typically designated with letters (such as AAA, AA, A, B, C, D, E…).

2. Try on Store-Bought Shoe Inserts:

Another method to determine your ideal shoe width is by trying on store-bought shoe inserts. These are specially designed insoles that can help adjust the width of your shoes by adding more cushioning or support:

a) Purchase inserts or insoles for shoes at well-stocked shoe stores or pharmacies.

b) Choose inserts designed for either wide or narrow feet based on what you believe is more suitable for you.

c) Insert them into the shoes you want to wear and try them on, assessing how they feel.

d) If the inserts improve the fit and comfort of your shoes, it indicates that you may need a wider or narrower shoe than your current pair.

3. Consult a Certified Shoe Fitter:

If you’re still unsure of your shoe width or have specific concerns about your feet, consult a certified shoe fitter. These professionals are trained to assess foot size and shape accurately and can advise you on the best shoe widths:

a) Find a reputable shoe store with certified fitters on staff. Stores specializing in running or sports footwear often have knowledgeable staff.

b) Provide background information such as your typical shoe size, any foot problems you have experienced, and the types of shoes you typically wear.

c) Allow the fitter to measure your feet and recommend specific brands, styles, and widths based on your needs.

Conclusion:

Knowing your correct shoe width is essential for comfort and optimal foot health. Use the methods described above to identify your perfect width accurately and confidently purchase shoes that fit comfortably and provide ample support. Happy shoe shopping!
