3 Ways to Degauss a Computer Monitor

Introduction:

Degaussing a computer monitor is essential to preventing image distortion and improving overall display quality. Essentially, degaussing removes the residual magnetic field caused by the buildup of static electricity in the monitor’s interior. This article will discuss three methods to effectively degauss a computer monitor – manual degaussing, using an external degausser, and employing built-in degauss features.

Method 1: Manual Degaussing

Manual degaussing involves removing the source of residual magnetic fields in your monitor by physically disconnecting it from the power source.

Steps:

1. Turn off your computer and unplug the monitor from the electrical outlet.

2. Wait for about 15-30 minutes to allow static electricity in the monitor’s interior to discharge naturally.

3. After waiting, reconnect the power source and switch on your computer.

4. Inspect your display and look for any image distortion or flickering issues; repeat these steps if necessary.

Method 2: Using an External Degausser

An external degausser produces a strong magnetic field which neutralizes residual magnetic charges within your computer monitor.

Steps:

1. Purchase or borrow a suitable external degausser specifically designed for monitors.

2. Power off your computer and disconnect the monitor from any power source.

3. Place the degausser about 3 feet away from the front of your screen.

4. Follow its instructions/manual on how to operate it (e.g., activating, moving closer/farther from the screen).

5. Slowly move the degausser around your screen in sweeping motions, gradually moving closer and then away while ensuring it doesn’t come into contact with other electronic devices.

6. After completing this process, turn off/battery drain the degausser before returning to reconnect your monitor’s power source and restarting your computer.

Method 3: Built-In Degauss Feature

Modern CRT monitors often come with a built-in degauss function that you can easily activate.

Steps:

1. Locate the ‘Degauss’ button or option on your monitor’s front control panel or in the on-screen display (OSD) settings.

2. Press the ‘Degauss’ button or select the corresponding option within the OSD settings menu.

3. Monitor flickering and a loud noise are normal during degaussing—this process typically lasts only a few seconds.

4. After degaussing is over, observe the monitor for any remaining image distortion; if necessary, repeat this process after waiting for about 15-20 minutes to avoid overheating.

Conclusion:

Degaussing a computer monitor is crucial to improve display quality and eliminate image distortion. Depending on your monitor type and available resources, you can choose among manual degaussing, using an external degausser, or utilizing the built-in degauss feature. Regular maintenance of your monitor not only ensures optimal display performance but also extends its lifespan.
