3 Ways to Cut Hair Extensions

Hair extensions are a popular way to add length and volume to your natural hair. However, not all extensions come in the perfect length or style for everyone. In such cases, you might want to cut your hair extensions to achieve the desired look. Here are three ways you can cut hair extensions without causing any damage or compromising their quality.

1. Traditional Cutting Technique

The traditional cutting technique is simple and works effectively for wefts, clip-ins, and tape-in hair extensions.

Follow these steps for a smooth haircut:

a) Secure the hair: Before you begin, make sure your hair extensions are clean, dry, and tangle-free. Position them on a flat surface or clip them onto a wig stand or mannequin head to ensure they remain in place.

b) Determine the desired length: Measure and mark the length you want your hair extensions to be using a comb and some hair clips.

c) Cut evenly: Hold the shears at a slight angle (about 45 degrees) and start cutting from the top of your marked section towards the bottom. This will create an even haircut. Make sure you maintain the same angle throughout.

d) Blend: Once you have achieved the desired length, blend the cut ends by holding your shears vertically and cutting into the tips of the hair extensions. This will create a more natural finish.

2. Razor Cutting Technique

Razor cutting is ideal for adding more texture and movement to your hair extensions, making them appear more natural.

a) Prep your tools: Ensure that your razor is sharp as a dull razor can damage the hair extensions, causing split ends.

b) Divide and secure: Divide your hair extensions into sections using clips, ensuring they lay flat on a table or other stable surface.

c) Start at an angle: Hold your razor at approximately 45 degrees towards the opposite direction of where you desire movement in your haircut.

d) Cut in a downward motion: While maintaining the angle, glide your razor along your hair extensions, following the desired shape. This technique will enhance softness and movement in your final look.

3. Point Cutting Technique

Point cutting is best suited for those who want a lighter, more feathered finish on their hair extensions.

a) Section your hair: Divide your hair extensions into smaller sections, using clips to keep them separate.

b) Cut at an angle: Hold each section at an angle, and snip into the ends using the tips of your scissors, creating a more textured finish.

c) Feather the edges: To create a feathery look, slide cut each section by holding your shears slightly open and gently moving them down the length of the hair extension to chisel off pieces of hair. Repeat this process for each section.

In conclusion, cutting hair extensions can be achieved through various techniques depending on your desired result. Remember always to use high-quality shears or razors during the process to prevent any damage. Routine maintenance will ensure that your hair extensions stay healthy, last longer, and continue looking fabulous!
