3 Ways to Cook Deer Sausage

Deer sausage is a delicious and versatile game meat that can be prepared in numerous ways, providing unique flavors and textures to your meals. It is low in fat compared to its commercially raised counterparts, making it a healthier protein option for those looking to reduce their fat intake. In this article, we will explore three different methods to cook deer sausage that will help you enjoy this tasty treat in various dishes.

1.Grilling

Grilling is a popular way to cook deer sausage, as it brings out the natural flavors of the meat while giving it a nice smoky finish. To grill deer sausage:

1. Preheat your grill to medium heat (approximately 350°F).

2. Place the sausages on the grill and cook for 4-6 minutes per side, turning occasionally until they are browned evenly.

3. Use a meat thermometer to ensure that the internal temperature of the sausage reaches at least 160°F.

4. Once cooked, remove from grill and let the sausages rest for a few minutes before serving.

Grilled deer sausage can be enjoyed as-is or with your favorite dipping sauces and sides.

2. Pan-Frying

Pan-frying is another quick and easy method for cooking deer sausage. It works best with fresh sausages that have not been pre-cooked. To pan-fry deer sausage:

1. Heat a non-stick skillet or frying pan on medium-high heat with a tablespoon of oil.

2. Place the sausages in the heated skillet and cook for 5-7 minutes per side, turning occasionally until they are browned evenly.

3. Reduce heat if necessary to prevent burning.

4. Check the internal temperature of the sausage with a meat thermometer; it should read at least 160°F when fully cooked.

5. Remove from heat and let rest for a couple of minutes before serving.

Pan-fried deer sausage pairs wonderfully with vegetables, in pasta dishes, or simply on its own with some mustard or other condiments.

3. Baking

Baking deer sausage is an excellent method for those who prefer a hands-off approach and want to cook multiple sausages at once. To bake deer sausages:

1. Preheat your oven to 400°F.

2. Place the sausages on a baking sheet with a small amount of oil spread on the surface.

3. Bake for 20-25 minutes, turning once halfway through the cooking time.

4. Check for an internal temperature of at least 160°F using a meat thermometer to ensure they are fully cooked.

5. Remove from the oven and let rest for at least 5 minutes before serving.

Baked deer sausage can be eaten in sandwiches, as part of casseroles, or simply enjoyed with your preferred side dishes.

Conclusion

Deer sausage is a flavorful and healthy alternative to regular pork and beef sausages. By following these three cooking methods – grilling, pan-frying, or baking – you can enjoy this delicious treat in various ways that suit your taste buds and preferences. Don’t hesitate to experiment with different seasonings and accompaniments to enhance the taste even further!
