3 Ways to Compost in a Tumbler

Introduction

Composting is an effective and eco-friendly way to recycle organic waste and produce nutrient-rich soil for your garden. Tumblers are a popular composting method that simplifies the process while accelerating decomposition. In this article, we will discuss three ways to compost in a tumbler.

1. Layered Composting

Layering allows for balanced compost production that promotes air circulation and helps maintain the proper moisture content within the tumbler. To use this method:

1. Begin by adding a layer of brown materials, such as dried leaves or straw, to the tumbler.

2. Follow the brown layer with a layer of green materials, like kitchen scraps or fresh grass clippings.

3. Continue alternating brown and green layers until the tumbler is full.

4. Turn the tumbler regularly to mix and aerate the contents for optimal decomposition.

2. Hot Composting

Hot composting requires maintaining a high temperature inside the tumbler, which subsequently speeds up decomposition:

1. Fill the tumbler with equal parts of brown and green materials.

2. Add water to ensure the contents are moist but not overly saturated.

3. Check the temperature inside the tumbler regularly – it should reach between 130°F and 160°F (54°C and 71°C).

4. Turn the tumbler daily to aerate its contents and maintain high temperatures.

5. Monitor moisture levels inside the composter; if it becomes too dry, add water sparingly.

1. Continuous Composting

Continuous composting involves adding materials to your tumbler consistently while also removing finished compost:

1. Start by filling only one side of a dual-chamber tumbler (if you have one) or partially filling a single-chamber tumbler.

2. Turn the tumbler regularly to maintain proper aeration.

3. As one side of the tumbler reaches capacity, begin filling the other side or add a second tumbler.

4. Once the first side is fully composted, remove and use the finished compost in your garden.

5. Refill and repeat this process as needed.

Conclusion

By using one or more of these three composting methods in a tumbler, you can quickly and efficiently create nutrient-rich compost that will benefit your garden. Whether you implement layering, hot composting, or continuous composting, carefully managing moisture levels and turning your tumbler regularly will ensure optimal results.
