3 Ways to Clear the Opening on a Spray Can

There is nothing more frustrating than realizing that your spray can is clogged right when you need it. The clogging of a spray can opening typically happens when paint or other residue accumulates inside the nozzle, blocking the flow of its contents. In this article, we will discuss three ways to clear the opening on a spray can and prevent this annoying occurrence.

1. Soak the Nozzle in Warm Water

One of the simplest methods to address a clogged spray can nozzle is to detach it and let it soak in warm water for some time. Follow these steps:

– Remove the nozzle from the spray can by gently wiggling it off.

– In a small bowl, fill warm water to fully submerge the nozzle.

– Let it soak for about 30 minutes to an hour, which will help break up any dried residue.

– Use an old toothbrush or small cleaning brush to gently scrub the nozzle, paying attention to any holes or crevices that might still be plugged.

– Rinse the nozzle thoroughly with clean water and let it dry completely before reattaching it back onto the spray can.

2. Utilize Compressed Air

Compressed air cans are commonly used for cleaning computer keyboards or electronic devices. They can also be used to clear away debris collected in a spray can’s nozzle.

– First, remove the clogged nozzle from your spray can.

– Aim the compressed air at the small hole at the top of the nozzle where the blockage occurred.

– Press firmly on the trigger of the compressed air can to release short bursts of air into each blocked area.

– Continue until all visible debris is removed from inside and outside of the nozzle.

– Reattach the cleaned nozzle onto your spray can and give it a test spray.

3. Employ a Needle or Pin

This method may take a bit more precision but is effective if you have a stubborn blockage. Using a needle, a safety pin, or any such thin object can help dislodge the residue in your spray can nozzle.

– Carefully remove the nozzle from the spray can.

– Insert the needle into the opening of the nozzle where the blockage is located.

– Gently move the needle around or use a twisting motion to break up and remove clogs.

– Keep in mind that this method might not remove all residue; it is recommended to follow up with one of the previous methods for best results.

– Once satisfied with your manual removal, reattach the nozzle and test your spray can.

In Conclusion

Spray cans are convenient tools for painting and other tasks, so it’s essential to keep them in good working condition. By employing these three methods above, you can keep your spray can openings clear of blockages and experience smooth spraying performance. Regular maintenance will extend the life of your spray cans and save money by avoiding frequent replacements.
