3 Ways to Clean Under Your Fingernails

Introduction: In daily life, our hands come into contact with various surfaces and substances. This makes it crucial to maintain good hygiene practices, especially when it comes to cleaning under our fingernails. Accumulated dirt and debris under the nails can not only look unappealing but also harbor bacteria that may lead to infections. In this article, we will discuss three effective ways to clean under your fingernails and promote overall hand health.

1. Use a Nail Brush

A nail brush is an excellent tool for cleaning beneath your fingernails. It usually has firm bristles that can easily remove stubborn grime and dirt. Here’s how you can use a nail brush:

– Wet your hands with warm water.

– Apply soap or hand wash on the brush or your hands.

– Hold the nail brush in one hand and gently scrub underneath each of the nails on the other hand.

– Make sure to scrub back and forth as well as side-to-side for thorough cleaning.

– Rinse your hands thoroughly with water and pat them dry with a clean towel.

2. Utilize an Orange Stick

An orange stick, sometimes called a cuticle pusher, is another useful tool that can help you clean under your nails. It’s a small wooden or metal stick with slanted, flat ends designed to safely remove dirt lodged beneath your nails. Follow these steps to clean under your fingernails using an orange stick:

– Begin by washing your hands with warm water and soap.

– Soften your nails by soaking them in warm water for 5-10 minutes.

– Hold the orange stick at an angle and gently slide it under each nail, starting from one corner and moving towards the other.

– Be cautious not to push too hard as it might damage your nail beds or cuticles.

– Wash your hands again to remove any dislodged dirt, and dry your hands with a clean towel.

3. Try Toothpicks or Flossers

Toothpicks or dental flossers can also be used carefully to clean under your fingernails, particularly when you don’t have a nail brush or an orange stick on hand. Ensure that you are gentle to avoid harming the skin beneath your nails. Here’s how to use toothpicks or flossers for nail cleaning:

– Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.

– Hold the toothpick or flosser gently and slide it under the edge of each nail.

– Move the toothpick or flosser back and forth in a scooping motion to remove dirt, taking care not to poke your skin.

– Once you’ve finished cleaning all of your nails, wash your hands again and pat them dry.

Conclusion:

Maintaining clean fingernails is essential not only for personal hygiene but also for health reasons. Regularly cleaning under your nails can help prevent bacterial buildup that might lead to illness or infection. Utilize any of these three methods, nail brushes, orange sticks, or toothpicks/flossers, depending on what’s available and convenient for you. Healthy hands require healthy nails!
