3 Ways to Clean Terrazzo

Introduction

Terrazzo, a beautiful and versatile flooring material, has been a popular choice for centuries. Made from a mix of marble, granite, quartz, or glass chips set in concrete or epoxy binder, it is known for its durability and low maintenance. But even terrazzo needs regular care to keep it looking pristine. In this article, we will explore three effective ways to clean terrazzo floors that will help you maintain your investment’s luster.

1. Sweep and Dry Mop

The most basic cleaning method for any hard surface, including terrazzo floors, is sweeping with a soft-bristled broom or using a dry mop. This initial step removes dirt, dust and debris that can build up on the surface and damage the finish.

How to do it:

– Start by removing any loose items or furniture from the area.

– Gently sweep or dry mop the terrazzo floor in one direction to gather dirt, dust, and debris.

– Use a dustpan or vacuum cleaner to pick up the collected particles.

This simple yet effective method should be performed regularly, ideally every day.

2. Damp Mopping with Gentle Cleanser

To maintain your terrazzo floor’s shine and keep it looking new, add damp mopping with a gentle cleanser into your routine at least once a week.

How to do it:

– Choose a pH-neutral cleaning solution specifically designed for terrazzo. Avoid using harsh chemicals like bleach or ammonia that can damage the material.

– Mix the cleaning solution in a bucket according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

– Soak the mop in the bucket and wring it out until it is damp but not soaking wet.

– Mop the terrazzo floor in overlapping strokes while maintaining even pressure.

– Let the floor air dry completely before replacing furniture or walking on it.

Regular damp mopping helps eliminate grime buildup that could harm the floor’s finish while maintaining its original shine.

3. Deep Cleaning with A Machine

If your terrazzo floor has stubborn stains, scratches, or a dull appearance from extended usage, you may need to consider a deep cleaning with a dedicated machine or hiring professionals.

How to do it:

– Rent or purchase a floor buffer or scrubber specifically designed for terrazzo floors.

– Use a cleaning solution mixed according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

– Follow the instructions provided by the floor buffer or scrubber manufacturer to clean and polish your terrazzo floor.

– If you are unsure about chemically clean and polish terrazzo, consider hiring professionals who specialize in restoring and maintaining it.

Deep cleaning not only restores your terrazzo’s original beauty but can also prolong its lifespan.

Conclusion

Terrazzo is known for its durability and ease of maintenance; however, regular cleaning is essential to preserve its aesthetic appeal. By incorporating sweeping and dry mopping, damp mopping with gentle cleansers, and occasional deep cleaning, you can keep your terrazzo floors looking as beautiful as the day they were installed.
