3 Ways to Clean Rugs With Vinegar

Vinegar is a common household item that can work wonders for cleaning various surfaces, including rugs. Its acidic nature helps break down dirt, grime, and stains, while its antibacterial properties ensure a thorough clean. Here are three simple yet effective ways to clean your rugs using vinegar.

1. Vinegar and Water Solution

For this method, you’ll need a spray bottle, white distilled vinegar, water, and a soft-bristle brush or cloth.

Step 1: Create a vinegar solution by mixing equal parts of white distilled vinegar and water in the spray bottle.

Step 2: Vacuum the rug thoroughly to remove any loose dirt or debris.

Step 3: Spray the vinegar solution over the entire surface of the rug, paying extra attention to stained or soiled areas. Be careful not to oversaturate the rug with the mixture.

Step 4: Gently scrub the rug using a soft-bristle brush or cloth. Work in circular motions to lift dirt and stains without damaging the rug fibers.

Step 5: Allow the rug to air dry completely before walking on it or returning furniture to its place.

2. Vinegar Spot Treatment

This method is particularly useful for addressing specific stains or spills on your rug. All you need is undiluted white distilled vinegar and a cloth.

Step 1: Blot up any excess liquid from the spill using a dry cloth.

Step 2: Dampen another cloth with undiluted white distilled vinegar and gently dab it onto the stain. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing as this can cause damage to rug fibers.

Step 3: Allow the vinegar to sit on the stain for a few minutes before blotting it away with a clean, dry cloth.

Step 4: Repeat this process until the stain is removed or significantly diminished. Allow your rug to air dry completely afterward.

3. Vinegar and Baking Soda Deep Clean

This method is best for giving rugs a thorough clean, especially if they have a large surface area or are particularly dirty. You’ll need white distilled vinegar, baking soda, a vacuum cleaner, a soft-bristle brush, and a bucket of warm water.

Step 1: Vacuum the rug thoroughly to remove any loose dirt or debris.

Step 2: Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the entire surface of the rug. Allow it to sit for at least one hour—or, better still, overnight.

Step 3: Vacuum up the baking soda from the rug.

Step 4: Mix equal parts of white distilled vinegar and water in a large bucket.

Step 5: Dip your soft-bristle brush into the vinegar solution and gently scrub the rug using circular motions. Work section by section to ensure an even clean.

Step 6: Once you’ve cleaned the entire rug, use a clean, wet cloth to remove any excess vinegar solution.

Step 7: Allow the rug to air dry completely before walking on it or returning furniture to its place.

By using any of these three methods, you can trust vinegar to help you maintain a clean and fresh rug in your home.
