3 Ways to Cite a YouTube Video

In the world of academic and professional writing, it is essential to give credit to the original sources that influenced or contributed to your work. Citing sources, including YouTube videos, allows you to build upon others’ ideas while avoiding plagiarism. Here are three commonly used citation styles for crediting a YouTube video.

1. APA (American Psychological Association) Style

APA is a widely-used citation style for the social sciences. To cite a YouTube video in APA format, follow this structure:

Author, A.A. [Screen name]. (Year, Month Day). Title of the video [Video]. YouTube. URL

For example:

Doe, J. [JohnDoeScience]. (2020, November 25). The effects of climate change on wildlife [Video]. YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=123456789

2. MLA (Modern Language Association) Style

MLA is another popular citation style commonly used in humanities and liberal arts papers. This is how you will cite a YouTube video in MLA format:

“Title of the Video.” YouTube, uploaded by Channel Name or Creator’s Name, Day Month Year, URL.

For example:

“The effects of climate change on wildlife.” YouTube, uploaded by John Doe, 25 Nov. 2020, www.youtube.com/watch?v=123456789.

3. Chicago/Turabian Style

Chicago and Turabian styles are widely used for business, history, and fine arts papers. This is how to cite a YouTube video in Chicago/Turabian format:

First Name Last Name or Channel Name, “Title of the Video,” YouTube video, running time, published date (Month Day, Year), URL.

For example:

John Doe or JohnDoeScience,” The effects of climate change on wildlife,” YouTube video, 10 min., published November 25, 2020,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=123456789.

In conclusion, it is important to correctly cite YouTube videos in your work to avoid plagiarism and give credit to the original creators. Following the correct citation guidelines for your specific style (APA, MLA, or Chicago/Turabian) will ensure that your citations are accurate and properly formatted.

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
