3 Ways to Care for a Soft Shelled Turtle

Soft-shelled turtles are fascinating reptiles with their unique appearance and intriguing personality. Caring for these aquatic creatures requires special attention, as they have specific needs that differ from traditional hard-shelled turtles. Here are three ways to ensure the well-being of your soft-shelled turtle.

1. Provide a Proper Habitat

The first step in caring for a soft-shelled turtle is to set up the right habitat. These turtles require a large tank or pond that provides ample swimming space and hides, as they love burrowing into the substrate. A minimum 75-gallon tank is recommended for most species, but larger turtles might need a more extensive enclosure.

The tank should provide a combination of shallow and deep water areas, with a water heater to maintain the temperature between 76-84°F (24-29°C). The basking area should have adequate heat and UVB lighting, important for maintaining your turtle’s healthy shell.

Substrate is crucial in a soft-shelled turtle’s habitat. Choose soft and sandy materials like fine-grade sand or smooth aquarium gravel to prevent harming their delicate skin. Incorporate live aquatic plants and hiding spots such as rocks, caves, or PVC pipes to replicate their natural environment.

2. Offer a Nutritious Diet

A healthy diet is critical for your soft-shelled turtle’s well-being. While they are primarily carnivorous, offering them a balanced and varied diet will promote optimal health and prevent malnutrition. Some dietary options include:

– Commercial turtle pellets: A staple food that provides essential nutrients.

– Fresh or frozen fish: Make sure to choose feeder fish that are free from disease.

– Crustaceans: Provide small shrimp or crayfish for your turtle.

– Insects: Occasional treats like mealworms or crickets can add variety to their diet.

– Vegetables: Offer leafy greens like kale or dandelion leaves to encourage a well-rounded diet.

Feed juveniles once or twice daily and adults every other day, ensuring not to overfeed them. Remove uneaten food after half an hour to prevent water contamination.

3. Maintain Good Water Quality

Clean water plays a vital role in the overall health of a soft-shelled turtle. A powerful filtration system is essential for maintaining water quality, as these turtles produce a lot of waste. External canister filters or power filters are recommended, with frequent replacements of filter media.

Perform regular water changes at least once a week to remove waste, bacteria, and harmful chemicals. Test the water regularly for pH levels (6.5-7), nitrogen compounds like ammonia and nitrites, and other key parameters to ensure a healthy living environment.

In conclusion, providing a proper habitat, nutritious diet, and maintaining good water quality are the keys to caring for soft-shelled turtles effectively. By following these guidelines, you can ensure your unique pet enjoys a long and happy life.
