3 Ways to Buy a Gun in Wisconsin

Wisconsin, like many other states in the United States, has a strong heritage of gun ownership and use for hunting, sport shooting, and self-defense. If you’re considering buying a gun in Wisconsin, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the state’s laws and regulations, as well as finding the best way to purchase your firearm. Here are three ways to buy a gun in Wisconsin.

1. Local Gun Store or Sporting Goods Retailer

The most traditional method of purchasing a firearm is by visiting a local gun store or sporting goods retailer. These businesses specialize in selling firearms and will have knowledgeable staff on hand to help you choose the right firearm for your needs. In Wisconsin, you must be 18 years old to purchase a rifle or shotgun and 21 years old to purchase a handgun.

Before completing the sale, the retailer will perform a background check using the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). The background check should typically take only a few minutes, but it may take longer if further investigation is required.

2. Buying at Gun Shows

Another option for purchasing a firearm in Wisconsin is attending a gun show. These events bring together multiple firearm vendors allowing buyers to compare prices and selection under one roof. When buying from a licensed dealer at a gun show, the process is similar to buying from a local store – you must pass the NICS background check.

In some cases, you may encounter private sellers at gun shows who are not required to conduct background checks since they’re not licensed dealers. However, it’s important to exercise caution when buying from private sellers as they may not provide receipts or warranty information.

3. Online Purchases

Buying firearms online has become increasingly popular due to convenience and often lower prices. It’s essential that you purchase from reputable sources such as well-known retailers or manufacturer websites. When purchasing online, the firearm must be shipped to a licensed dealer who will handle the transfer process and perform the required background check.

It’s important to note that because online sales occur across state lines, they are subject to federal law. This means that you must be at least 21 years old to purchase handguns and 18 years old for rifles and shotguns in accordance with the Gun Control Act of 1968.

Conclusion

If you’re looking to buy a firearm in Wisconsin, consider one of these methods: shopping at a local gun store or sporting goods retailer, attending a gun show, or making an online purchase. Each option has its benefits, so choose the one that best suits your needs and preferences. Always remember to educate yourself about Wisconsin’s gun laws and follow all regulations to ensure a safe and legal transaction.
