3 Ways to Apply Diatomaceous Earth

Introduction:

Diatomaceous Earth is a natural, eco-friendly solution for various problems around the house, yard, and garden. This soft, powdery substance comes from sedimentary rocks composed of tiny fossilized aquatic organisms called diatoms. It serves as a repellent, a pesticide, and a supplement for many applications. In this article, we will explore three ways to apply Diatomaceous Earth effectively.

1. Pest Control in Home and Gardens:

One of the most common uses of Diatomaceous Earth is as a natural pesticide to control insects and other pests in your home and gardens. To do this effectively:

a) Mix Diatomaceous Earth with water to create a paste. You can use one cup of DE for every half-gallon of water.

b) Apply this paste to the affected areas where you see pests or notice their presence.

c) Let the paste dry and turn back into a fine powder.

d) Reapply as needed until the pests are eliminated.

2. As a Soil Amendment:

Diatomaceous Earth can improve the overall health of your plants when used as a soil amendment by increasing water retention and adding minerals.

a) Before planting or repotting, mix Diatomaceous Earth into your soil at a rate of about 10% by volume. So, for every nine parts of soil, you should add one part DE.

b) After planting, you can also sprinkle DE around the base of plants to provide additional protection against pests like slugs and snails.

3. As an Animal Feed Additive:

Diatomaceous Earth can be added directly to your pets’ or livestock’s feed to provide health benefits, such as enhanced digestion and pest control.

a) Calculate the appropriate amount based on your animal’s weight. Generally, it’s recommended that you add 2% DE by weight to their regular feed.

b) Mix the DE into the food well to ensure even distribution.

c) Make sure to continue feeding this mixture over time for best results.

Conclusion:

These are just three of the many ways you can apply Diatomaceous Earth to your advantage. Whether it’s controlling pests, improving your soil, or providing benefits to your animals, this versatile and natural substance proves to be a useful addition to any household or garden. As with any new application, start with small amounts and consult a specialist if you have any concerns or questions.
